McKayla Stacey, 17, of Andover, Kansas, will appear on the show’s upcoming 21st season, which airs this Sunday. According to the singer, her father, Phil Stacey, inspired her to explore singing. McKayla said in a recent audio interview with 101.3 KFDI that she’s been performing since high school because she comes from a family of musicians. She says her father traveled with a band as a country artist and this helped her develop a love of singing at an early age.
McKayla’s favorite judge is still the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer Lionel Richie, and she’s motivated to audition as it’s the sixth season of ABC’s iconic reality TV series, by way of something related to the journey of Phil, McKayla’s father in the 6. series. , back when it aired on FOX.
American Idol originally aired on FOX from 2002 to 2016, then went on hiatus for two years before continuing in 2018. After a two-year hiatus, the show returned with a sixth season in 2023. McKayla appeared via Zoom for her rehearsal, singing the 1987 rock classic Alone by Heart. Phil and McKay’s situation was unusual. Phil’s wife, Kendra, gave birth to their daughter, McKayla, in the summer of 2006, while he was in Memphis rehearsing for the sixth season of American Idol.
Phil performed live versions of My Sweetheart and Let’s Get It On. Former judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson voted for him after a brief deliberation, while Simon Cowell abstained. American Idol cameras followed him when he saw little McKayla for the first time towards the end of the show’s finale. Phil made it to Final 6 in Season 6.
