DC Universe boss James Gunn responds to whether or not The Batman – Part II has been canceled following a new rumor. In 2022, the Dark Knight got reimagined for the big screen with Robert Pattinson in The Batman, focusing on a younger iteration of Bruce Wayne. Following the first film’s critical and box office success, The Batman – Part II is on its way, with director Matt Reeves returning to helm the sequel.

As of right now, The Batman – Part II is scheduled to be released in theaters in October 2025, meaning filming has to start soon. There have been few The Batman – Part II updates lately, unintentionally leadng to rumors floating around that the movie has seemingly been canceled, which fans asked DCU co-CEO James Gunn about on Threads.

The Batman – Part II Cancelation Rumors Explained

While Reeves has been working on the Batman movie sequel, he has also been occupied with a new spinoff show, The Penguin, which will help flesh out The Batman universe. It was also revealed that Reeves is developing the Arkham Asylum TV show for Gunn’s DC Universe, with the series moving from being discussed as part of The Batman‘s Elseworlds universe to the main DCU slate. This may have played a part in the rumors about The Batman 2‘s cancelation, as there was initial confusion about this franchise move.

Another reason why there may have been audience concerns regards the status of The Batman – Part II‘s script. Jeffrey Wright, who plays Jim Gordon, notably mentioned in an interview with ET Online that, “You’ve seen as much of a script as I have at this point,” suggesting the cast hadn’t yet seen the screenplay for the sequel. This may have exacerbated concerns about what was happening with the movie, and – combined with the Arkham Asylum show update and delays the sequel has experienced – led to rumors that the movie itself wouldn’t be going forward.

The Batman – Part II was initially eyed to start filming in November 2023, but the Hollywood strikes made it impossible.

Unless The Batman – Part II gets pushed back from its October 2025 release date, updates are likely to surface in the near future. Once a production date is revealed, it will better help indicate how soon the actors are getting ready for the sequel, and what timeline is to be expected for the new installment. Hopefully, some positive The Batman – Part II updates will emerge sooner rather than later.
