Andrew Garfield On If He Gets Upset When Fans Prefer Other Spider-Man Actors: “I’m 40 Years Old If You Love Me, Fine”

Summary

  • Andrew Garfield, the second live-action Spider-Man, opened up about fans preferring other actors in the role, stating, “If you love me, fine, and if you don’t love me, it’s your loss.”
  • Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man was well-received, but his second solo appearance didn’t fare as well, spelling doom for his tenure.
  • At the Red Sea Film Festival, Garfield expressed his indifference towards fans who prefer Tobey Maguire or Tom Holland, asserting that it doesn’t affect him.

Andrew Garfield, who played the second iteration of live-action Spider-Man and officially joined the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has opened up on how he feels about fans preferring other Spider-Man actors. Garfield’s take on the iconic Marvel character was Sony’s second attempt at bringing the franchise to life in cinema. His first outing in The Amazing Spider-Man was met with much praise, but his second and final solo appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 unfortunately spelled doom for his tenure. That was, at least, until Spider-Man: No Way Home invited him back.

During the Red Sea Film Festival, attended by Variety, Garfield was asked how he felt about fans who prefer Tobey Maguire or Tom Holland as Spider-Man actors, stating, “I’m 40 years old. If you love me, fine, and if you don’t love me, it’s your loss.” Suffice it to say, Garfield has apparently come to terms with any criticism leveled at him over the years, but it’s also fair to say that he was one of the two Spider-Man movies’ strongest features. If anything, fans were just as happy to see him return in Spider-Man: No Way Home as they were to see Maguire and Holland.

Will Andrew Garfield Ever Return As Spider-Man In The MCU?

Even though Garfield, Maguire, and Holland were extremely well-received in their Spider-Man: No Way Home roles – contributing to it being the third-highest-grossing MCU movie – there is little chance that Garfield will return to the MCU after the significance of his first appearance and departure. If he were to return, it would likely be to help the Avengers take on Kang, or another villain, in Avengers: Secret Wars. The sixth Avengers movie has the possibility of uniting many Marvel heroes across the multiverse.

However, theories abound over whether Garfield will reprise his role as Spider-Man in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which is set to continue with Madame Web. After all, he is still Sony’s most recent iteration of Spider-Man, and his MCU appearance left a good impression. But, with Spider-Man’s appearance in Sony’s universe still a while off, the studio may be gearing towards a younger Peter Parker.

It is also more likely that Garfield will reprise his role as part of Sony’s animated Spider-Verse. He already appeared, albeit via archive footage, in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, before lavishing praise on the movie as the host of a Q&A at a screening. This conspicuous proximity to the movie’s promotion has raised eyebrows, compounded by the fact that his scene was particularly prominent in the movie. Either way, it will be a while before the trilogy finale releases and, therefore, a while before Garfield reprises the role last seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home in any capacity.
