Freeform’s sitcom Young And Hungry enjoyed five seasons on the air but can fans of the show expect a sixth season? Young And Hungry made its debut on Freeform (then called ABC Family) in 2014. The San Francisco-set sitcom was inspired by food blogger Gabi Moskowitz of BrokeAss Gourmet fame and starred Emily Osment as Gabi Diamond – a feisty foodie who gets a job as a personal chef for millionaire tech entrepreneur Josh Kaminski (Jonathan Sadowski, Live Free Or Die Hard).
Gabi and Josh’s professional relationship is complicated by the fact they clearly like each other and have a drunken one-night stand. Over the next few seasons of Young And Hungry, the love-struck pair had an on-again, off-again relationship before finally getting together at the end of the first half of season 5. After a year-long hiatus, Freeform finally aired the latter half of season 5 in 2018 which ended on a cliffhanger which saw Gabi proposing to Josh and asking him to move to Seattle with her.
Will fans of the show – and Gabi – ever find out what Josh’s answer was in Young And Hungry season 6? Unfortunately, not – here’s why.
Freeform Canceled Young And Hungry In 2018
Before the final ten episodes of Young And Hungry aired, Freeform announced in March 2018 it had canceled the sitcom. With the year-long gap between season 5A and 5B, perhaps the show’s cancellation was to be expected. According to star Emily Osment, however, it seemed the cast and crew were pretty convinced Young And Hungry season 6 was on the cards and the series finale cliffhanger would certainly suggest so too.
A Young And Hungry Movie Was Once In Development
In place of Young And Hungry season 6, Freeform announced a follow-up feature-length TV movie was in the works. Freeform planned for the Young And Hungry movie to wrap up the events of the sitcom’s fifth season and – in the network’s own words – “further the adventures of Gabi, Josh and their circle of friends.”
Unfortunately, the movie was scrapped too as confirmed in a tweet from Osment. Consequently, the season 5 finale cliffhanger remains up in the air but Osment suggested in her tweet the movie would most likely have seen Gabi and Josh tying the knot.
Young And Hungry Fans Pushed For A Netflix Revival
After Freeform pulled the plug on both Young And Hungry season 6 and the TV movie, fans campaigned for Netflix to save the sitcom. The streaming giant was an appropriate target considering Netflix has revived several shows like Lucifer and Arrested Development. Unfortunately, Netflix didn’t bite and it’s safe to say that Young And Hungry season 6 won’t be happening.
