Why the Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti simply isn’t enough for 2023

The RTX 4060 Ti is not one of the best graphics cards you can buy. It’s hard to even call it a good graphics card, with reports suggesting there’s been “zero” interest in Nvidia’s latest GPU. I’ve tested the card and was going to review it, but this is a GPU that challenges the status quo.

If you visit various graphics card review websites, you’ll see that the ratings are all over the place. Some praise the card for its solid improvements in power efficiency and Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) at a lower price point, while others focus on its limited VRAM and the implications it has for modern gaming.

And both opinions are correct. The RTX 4060 Ti is the cheapest way to get DLSS 3 and completely blows out the competition when it comes to ray tracing. Still, you can’t ignore the VRAM issues with the card, as it’s not adequately equipped to handle the demands of gaming in 2023, let alone games coming in years to come.

If you want a simple answer, the RTX 4060 Ti is a good option if you want DLSS 3 and don’t want to lower the settings in some games. Nothing about this GPU is simple though, and when you start digging into what amounts to a $400 investment, its problems become too big to ignore.

It’s faster for sure

Let’s say this up front: the RTX 4060 Ti is faster than the RTX 3060 Ti. When we look at power on tap, it wins, and it’s obvious if you look at my standard game pack. This is clearer at 1080p, where the RTX 4060 Ti offers a solid 27% improvement over the RTX 3060 Ti and nearly matches the RTX 3070 Ti.

That’s not a bad generational improvement, and would usually be enough to recommend a new graphics card. That’s a similar improvement to what the RTX 4070 delivered at the target resolution, and that card earned the rare Editors’ Choice badge in my review of the RTX 4070. This isn’t a score review of the RTX 4060 Ti, but definitely I wouldn’t give it the same label.

4K performance for RX 7600.

A look at my 4K benchmarks reveals a clue as to why, even if the RTX 4060 Ti isn’t positioned as a 4K graphics card. At 4K, the RTX 4060 Ti is just 16% faster than the RTX 3060 Ti. That’s not normal.

When you run games at higher resolutions, your graphics card becomes the limiting factor. At 1080p, most games have at least one insignificant CPU bottleneck. This means you should see more upscaling at 4K than at 1080p, but with the RTX 4060 Ti we see the opposite.

See RTX 3060 Ti vs. RTX 3070 Ti. At 1080p, the RTX 3070 Ti is roughly 29% faster, and at 4K, just over 31% faster. Similarly, the RX 6600 XT is 16% faster than the RX 6600 at 1080p, but 21% faster at 4K. You’ll occasionally see some regressions depending on the two GPUs you’re comparing, but you shouldn’t see the performance scaling drop almost in half when you go from 1080p to 4K.

This is where we have to start looking for other games. Although my usual test suite has a number of demanding titles, this strange behavior is better explained with newer versions.

Wait, isn’t it faster?

The RTX 4060 Ti looks pretty bad on the inside Return. At 1080p, it offers an acceptable but disappointing 9% advantage over the RTX 3060 Ti, but at 4K, that improvement dwindles to just 5%, or in real-world conditions, just two frames. That’s a far cry from the 27% improvement I saw in my standard set of tests, and while it’s easy to dismiss a game as an isolated problem, the RTX 4060 Ti’s problems run deeper.

In some games, the RTX 3060 Ti is faster. No, the graph of Hogwarts Legacy there is no typo above. It is the RTX 3060 Ti that beats the RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p and 1440p. That’s only a 2% advantage, but the RTX 3060 Ti launched in December 2020 for the same $400 that Nvidia is currently asking for the RTX 4060 Ti.

That’s not the worst either. IN the last of us part 1 RTX 3060 Ti is 12% faster at 1080p and close 40% faster at 1440 p. There is something else to the story with this chart which I will address in the next section. In reality, the RTX 3060 Ti should only be 10% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti, but even that is really bad news. As a side note, these tests were done with the latest patch for The last of us on the computer, which specifically deals with VRAM usage.

Don’t take these numbers as law. As the performance in the previous section shows, the RTX 4060 Ti is faster than the RTX 3060 Ti. These games simply highlight the VRAM issues the RTX 4060 Ti has and lay out the implications of this for modern gaming.

The death of 8GB? It is not so simple

The RTX 4060 Ti has been criticized for only having 8GB of video memory, but as my tests show, narrowing the issue down to just memory capacity doesn’t really solve the problem. The RTX 3060 Ti also only has 8 GB of memory. It should be 20-30% slower than the RTX 4060 Ti, but in VRAM constrained scenarios it is sometimes faster even with the same memory capacity. This is a bandwidth problem.

the last of us part 1 clearly shows the problem. It maxes out VRAM usage on the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 4060 Ti, but the RTX 4060 Ti feels far more affected. The RTX 3060 Ti is actually not 40% faster than the RTX 4060 Ti in this game at 1440p. It’s just that the RTX 3060 Ti can transfer more data to memory at once, avoiding some of the huge lag that occurs with the RTX 4060 Ti.

If you look at the chart above, you can see that gameplay dropped to around three frames per second (fps) for a few seconds in short bursts, resulting in a much lower average compared to the RTX 3060 Ti. Normally it would dump this data, but it’s a constant problem on the RTX 4060 Ti. My best guess is that the VRAM buffer needs new data to be transferred, resulting in a huge slowdown.

It’s not always that difficult, but it’s there. If you look at the two graphs above you can see constant jumps in frame time at 1080p s the last of us part 1 with the RTX 4060 Ti, but only one of those jumps with the RTX 3060 Ti. This is not just in the last of us part 1 either. In the Hardware Unboxed RTX 4060 Ti review, you can see a similar stutter at 1080p on both The Story of the Plague: Requiem and The Callisto Protocol.

The result is also not always reflected in the performance chart. As you can see in my sight red drop on PC, VRAM optimizations may result in stutters and reduced textures in certain games. While its performance may still be on par, the game doesn’t look great, which is the case. red drop and i play like Hogwarts Legacy.

What’s happening? The RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 3060 Ti have 8 GB of VRAM, but the RTX 4060 Ti has a much narrower memory bus. The size of the memory bus determines how much data can travel between the memory and the GPU at one time. The RTX 3060 Ti has a 256-bit memory bus, but the RTX 4060 Ti only has a 128-bit bus for the same 8GB of GDDR6 memory.

In a bit of pre-launch astroturfing, Nvidia explained that it could use a thinner bus due to the increased L2 cache on the RTX 4060 Ti. This isn’t exactly a new concept – AMD introduced its Infinity Cache a few years ago to improve memory bandwidth – but the idea is that a larger cache increases overall bandwidth, rather than simply relying on a bus. larger memory.

This leads to theoretically higher performance, but the real-world results are clear: In VRAM-constrained scenarios, the RTX 4060 Ti runs into issues not present with the RTX 3060 Ti’s larger memory bus.

The RTX 4060 Ti is a rare situation where its raw power and price don’t match its memory specs. Those are the specs the RX 7600 has, but that GPU is $130 cheaper and is in a clear performance class below the RTX 4060 Ti. That makes sense for the upcoming RTX 4060, which comes out in July with 8GB of VRAM for $300, but not for the $400 RTX 4060 Ti. At this price and performance, you should have 16 GB of memory or, at a minimum, a larger bus size.

Something like the RX 6700 XT’s 12GB system memory is probably a better fit for the RTX 4060 Ti. It has 12GB of VRAM and 96MB of Infinity Cache, allowing more data to be stored on the graphics card so it doesn’t have to go to system memory. The RX 6700 XT is slower than the RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p, so I don’t want to fool anyone. But it’s a solid example of what a memory system in this class of graphics card should look like for 2023 requirements.

With a card like the RTX 4060 Ti, it’s easy to see the 8GB capacity and require more VRAM. More VRAM definitely helps, but the RTX 3060 Ti is proof that it’s not just about capacity. I’m curious to see what the RTX 4060 Ti would look like with a larger memory bus and how the card would fare in games with limited VRAM. I doubt it looks much better.

Not enough for 2023

It’s clear that Nvidia knows there’s a problem here. It will release a $500 version of the RTX 4060 Ti in July with 16GB of VRAM. By his own admission, “there are a handful of games that run better on ‘High’ presets on the 4060 Ti (8 GB) and maxed ‘Ultra’ settings on the 4060 Ti (16 GB),” despite that the cards “deliver the same performance” in “most games”. And that’s with the games we have today. The problem could be exaggerated as time goes on (remember, the Xbox Series X has 10GB of VRAM and the PS5 has 16GB).

Did Nvidia undermine its own GPU to push customers to the more expensive 16GB model? Is this a situation where GPU prices just go up, similar to what we saw with the RTX 4080? I don’t know, I don’t care, and neither should you. Ultimately it’s all about getting the most performance at the lowest price, and the RTX 4060 Ti misses the mark.

Instead, there are several other excellent graphics cards at the same price. AMD’s RX 6700 XT is slower, but it doesn’t have the VRAM issues of the RTX 4060 Ti, and it’s $50-$70 cheaper. If you can stretch your budget, the RTX 3070 offers similar performance for around $50 more and comes with a wider memory bus. You may still run into VRAM limitations, but they’re not as severe as the RTX 4060 Ti.

RTX 4060 Ti I’m not giving a point review because I can’t give a good faith assessment of its performance. In some games it looks like a fantastic generational upgrade, while in others it looks like one of the most disappointing GPUs ever released. You shouldn’t be buying it anyway, at least not until its retail price drops significantly.
