Eating the rich is often a metaphor, but in MenuIt’s a bit more literal. Following a group of wealthy people who pay for an extravagant meal on a secluded island, the film is a sharp satire full of clever surprises.
Directed by Mark Mylod, this dark comedy captures (pardon the pun) food culture while presenting an exciting plot that is both logical and absurd. If you want to know what happens during the end of the movie, follow us after the spoiler warning below.

As this restaurant’s wealthy patrons go through the sequence of their meal, carefully prepared by chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes, Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise) and his team, they begin to realize that all is not well. . People start dying and eventually it becomes clear that Slowik intends to kill himself, all of his team and all of his clients.
There’s only one wrinkle in his plan: Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy, Magik in the X-Men film franchise the new mutants), a client Slowik did not plan for. It turns out that Margot is a prostitute hired by Tyler (Nicholas Hoult, star of the Hulu comedy series a great), one of the other clients, because his girlfriend broke up with him. Tyler knew they would all die by the end of the meal, but he was so desperate to experience Slowik’s food that he went anyway and hired Margot because he knew Slowik wouldn’t take it on his own.
Margot is not part of Slowik’s plan, so Slowik gives her a choice: she can join the servers or stay with the clients. She eventually joins the servers, but she uses a rare moment just to ask for help. However, Slowik had planned for this eventuality, so she realizes that she is completely and utterly trapped.

At that moment, Margot realizes what she must do, and what no guest has done to Slowik in a long time: she decides to send the food back. She tells him that she is not satisfied with her intellectual dishes and has no love for his food. Instead of her dishes, which are often too smart for her own good, she orders a simple cheeseburger after seeing a photo of Slowik flipping burgers when she was young in the ’90s.
He makes a burger and she just takes a bite. She then asks him if she can take the rest and he says yes. She leaves the island while Slowik prepares his last meal with the other guests who have earned her fate, at least in Slowik’s mind.
As Margot takes the boat back to land, we see Slowik and his staff preparing dessert, which is a modified version of s’mores. The customers dress up in chocolate and marshmallows, and the entire restaurant goes up in flames. Meanwhile, Margot comes ashore and eats the rest of her burger. She takes out the menu for the night from the gift bag she was given and wipes her mouth on it.
In the final moments of the film, it is emphasized that Slowik, despite his moral rectitude, is just as broke as his clients. They’ve been destroyed by a culture that loves food for all the wrong reasons, and the only way to escape is not to play. Food is supposed to bring joy, and when you just think about how to make it smart, you miss the joy altogether.
