An exclusive new clip from Star Wars’ next Disney+ TV show, Star Wars: Tales of the Empire depicts General Grievous during his brutal slaughter of the Nightsisters of Dathomir. Although many were anticipating Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi season 2 among Star Wars’ upcoming TV shows, Tales of the Empire was shockingly announced in its place. While Tales of the Jedi focused on two Jedi, Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku, the Tales of the Empire trailer revealed a focus on Barriss Offee and Morgan Elsbeth. Now, a new, exclusive clip sheds light upon what Morgan’s story will include.

The clip from Tales of the Empire, posted on X by IGN, shows the Nightsisters of Dathomir desperately trying to defend against General Grievous’ attack. Although the massacre of the Nightsisters was shown in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it seems Tales of the Empire will highlight the Nightsisters’ perspectives in greater detail:

As the trailer for Tales of the Empire revealed Morgan Elsbeth to be a key character, the murder of the Nightsisters will no doubt be crucial context; as a Nightsister herself, this moment was undoubtedly life-altering and devastating for Morgan.

The Nightsister Purge Is One Of Palpatine’s Most Evil Schemes

Although Star Wars, and Palpatine in particular, has introduced a number of truly disturbing acts of violence—from Order 66 to the destruction of Alderaan with the Death Star—the massacre of the Nightsisters of Dathomir is high on the list of the most terrible Star Wars atrocities. As depicted in The Clone Wars and as will no doubt be depicted in Tales of the Empire, this attack by General Grievous was an out-and-out purge, done at the behest of Palpatine. Tragically, this slaughter was almost entirely successful; few Nightsisters outlived this event.

Few Nightsisters outlived this event.

It makes sense why Palpatine would commit such a heinous act. As Star Wars’ Force-sensitive witches, the Nightsisters wielded incredible and quite unique power at a time when Palpatine was most actively attempting to rise to the top. They were neither Jedi nor Sith, and that made them a threat to Palpatine. Moreover, Asajj Ventress, also a Nightsister, had become antagonistic toward Palpatine’s apprentice at the time, Count Dooku, which Palpatine no doubt saw as a possible weakness in his plan for Galactic takeover.

Like the Jedi, the Nightsisters therefore suffered a genocide as a result of Palpatine’s bloodthirsty quest for power and control. Although updates on Tales of the Empire are ongoing, it is clear that this backstory will play an important role for Morgan Elsbeth, whose life was forever shaped by this tragedy. Although the full extent of General Grievous’ role in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire remains to be seen, it is clear that the lightsaber-wielding Separatist will be making his Star Wars return to carry out this terrible massacre of the Nightsisters.
