Have you ever encountered a cool or interesting plant and weren’t sure how to figure out what it is? If you have an iPhone, you’re in luck—you can easily identify plants from your Photos app with the help of Visual Look Up. In this article, we’ll teach you how to use Visual Look Up to identify plants with your iPhone, and give some third-party app options if you’re looking for a few more features.
- You can use Visual Look Up on any photo, be it a photo you just took or a photo that was sent to you.
- After taking a photo, tap the “i” button under the image to see if it has identified anything.
- Tap the “Look Up” button to see what plant your iPhone has identified.
Take a photo of the plant in question. Make sure to get as much of the plant in the photo as you can. Try to avoid other plants being in the background of the picture, if possible.
- You can do this on any photo, including photos sent to you by other people or photos you’ve previously taken, as well.[1]
- You must be on iOS 15 or later to use Visual Look Up.
Tap on the photo you just took. In the lower-left corner of your Camera app, you can access your Camera Roll. Tap this image to view your recently snapped image.
- If you want to identify a plant from a photo someone sent you, open the photo by tapping on it and then tap the download button in the bottom-right corner. It looks like an arrow going into a square. You will then be able to find the photo in your Camera Roll.
Look for the “i” button on the bottom of the screen and tap it. It’s the middle button, between the favorite/heart button and the “Edit” button. If the “i” button has sparkles on it, that means Visual Look Up has identified something in your photo.

Tap the “Look Up” button after tapping the “i” button. If Visual Look Up identifies a plant in your photo, there will be a leaf icon and it will say “Look Up – Plant.”
