Speaking on an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed these plans, indicating this movie will likely release in 2026.
According to Collider, Iger also confirmed this would be the first of a new slate of Star Wars movies – “a number of which have already been announced.” Three other upcoming Star Wars movies have been officially announced to date, and this confirms others are in the works as well.

Lucasfilm’s theatrical plans for Star Wars were put on hiatus after the box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the critical and popular backlash against Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The studio pivoted to the small screen, focusing on a range of popular Star Wars Disney+ TV shows. These have been a tremendous success, but it was always only a matter of time before Lucasfilm headed back to the big screen. What’s more, given Din Djarin was the frontrunner for the Disney+ shows, it makes sense the characters from The Mandalorian are leading the charge.
The most intriguing part of Iger’s comment, though, is his implication that other mystery projects are in the works as well. This presumably includes Donald Glover’s Lando, which has shifted back to being a movie rather than a TV show, but there must be more. Iger seems to be implying there are other surprises in various stages of development, a prospect that will surely delight and excite the fanbase.
The confirmed Star Wars movies open up three completely different eras for future exploration. James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” project is set over 25,000 years ago, and will tell the origin story of the Force itself. The Mandalorian & Grogu is set roughly five years after Return of the Jedi, in the time of the New Republic. And Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will unveil Rey’s New Jedi Order, 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Any one of these time periods will be ripe for further exploration, meaning the possibilities are endless.
