AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT vs. Nvidia RTX 2070 Super

The battle for the latest generation of GPUs comes down to two graphics cards: AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 XT and Nvidia’s RTX 2070 Super. Both cards offer excellent performance at Full HD and 1440p, and aren’t too expensive either (if you can find them in stock). To help you decide between the two, we’re throwing both cards into the ring for this RX 5700 XT vs RTX 2070 Super comparison.

Before you dive into that, keep in mind that there is a constant shortage of GPUs. The 5700 XT and 2070 Super models are out of stock at major retailers and prices on the used market are skyrocketing. We currently have four alternatives to buying an expensive GPU if you don’t mind waiting.

Prices and availability

The AMD RX 5700 XT launched in July 2019 for an MSRP of $399. The slightly slower RX 5700 launched at the same time for $349. Due to continued GPU shortages, both cards are now much more expensive, if you can find them in stock. As of May, the cheapest new card we could find was $1,649. The 5700 XT is a great card, but not for the price. Right now, it’s better to wait for the RX 6700 XT or 6800 XT.

For the used market, 5700 XT cards sell for anywhere from $700 to over $1,500. You can find an RX 6700 XT on eBay for around $1000, which is a much better card than the 5700 XT. Neither is worth anywhere near asking price, so if you can wait for prices to normalize, that’s your best bet.

The RTX 2070 Super also launched in July 2019 for an MSRP of $499. However, supplies of 2070 Super graphics cards were already dwindling before the GPU shortage, so you won’t find any anywhere near that price. The cheapest new card we could find was the Zotac Mini card, which retailed for $1,500.

Fortunately, the used market is not also bad. We found several cards sold on eBay for around $700, though some went for over $1,000. At $700, the 2070 Super isn’t a bad deal, at least considering the dire state of the GPU market. Still, it’s a better idea to buy an RTX 3070. They sell out in seconds, but Nvidia and its board partners are still actively restocking the card, so you might find a new one if you search.

Regardless, both cards are currently overpriced. While the GPU shortage may take a few years to go away, hopefully prices for next-gen cards will start to come down soon.

Performance

While there are some physical and feature differences between these two cards, when it comes to graphics, the biggest factor for most is performance. But before we get to our benchmark results, let’s take a look at the specs of these cards to see how they stack up.

*Note: The Radeon RX 5700 XT’s “boost clock” is its theoretical maximum under stock conditions and will likely only be reached in fractions of a second. Its most typical operating clock is around 1,755MHz.

Since AMD and Nvidia cards are built differently, not all specs are directly comparable. However, there are some intriguing results from these numbers. The 5700 series sees a big increase in clocks compared to previous GPU lines like Vega, which has helped bring AMD card clocks closer to stock Nvidia GPUs. AMD also used GDDR6 instead of the more expensive HBM of the new generations. The memory runs at the same speed and settings as the Nvidia part, resulting in the same bandwidth for both cards. However, the 5700 XT consumes a bit more power.

In our 3DMark Time Spy benchmark, the 5700 XT performed well, outperforming even the RTX 2060 Super. It also nearly matched the score of the much more expensive AMD Radeon VII, but trailed the 2070 Super by just over 1,000 points.

This difference was less pronounced in games, with certain titles performing better on one card than the other. IN Fortnite, The RTX 2070 Super was clearly the more capable card, with a 10fps and 30fps lead over the 5700 XT. The difference was much less obvious at 4K than it was at 1080p, but the 5700 XT always fell behind by a noticeable margin.

In reference designs, the 2070 Super outperforms the 5700 XT in terms of cooling and noise. AMD’s outdated fan cooler is no match for the 2070 Super’s dual-fan setup. However, when it comes to third-party options, there’s something else to the story.

There are quite a few dual-fan 5700 XT models, including the Sapphire Pulse and the Gigabyte Gaming OC. If you’re willing to splurge a bit more, there are plenty of cards with three fans too, including the XFX Thicc III Ultra and Asus’ ever-popular Strix card.

Still, the reference design is particularly attractive, as are most of the third-party options. Cooling solutions are many, but with a hotter GPU it’s hard to escape the noise. Thermal performance varies by model, so we suggest checking reviews for the specific model you’re interested in before pulling the trigger.

On the part of Nvidia, there is not much to report. The 2070 Super runs cooler and quieter on the reference design, and most third-party cards only improve on that. Still, there are far fewer third-party options if you’re in the market for a new card.

Ray tracing and image sharpening

A great feature of the RTX generation of graphics cards is their support for hardware accelerated ray tracing. This is made possible by the addition of Turing GPU RT cores, which analyze the complicated numbers behind lighting effects in real time. Although AMD has done ray tracing in the recent past, its RX 5700 XT doesn’t have that capability. Ray tracing greatly degrades performance on the most powerful graphics cards, even with Nvidia’s own deep learning supersampling to help it out, and it’s not something the 5700 XT can do at the moment (however, the newer RX 6000 cards Yeah).

However, what I can do is sharpen the image. Thanks to Radeon Image Sharpening and FidelityFX, AMD’s 5700 XT can take advantage of the Image Sharpening algorithm, a clever post-processing effect that can lighten some of the blur that usually occurs when heavy smoothing is applied. It also doesn’t have a huge impact on performance.

As mentioned, AMD’s new RX 6000 cards support ray tracing. They should also support a DLSS-like feature soon. AMD has been constantly testing its FidelityFX Super Resolution feature, which promises to deliver dynamic improvement without impacting performance.

The RTX 2070 is the Super (expensive) card we deserve

It might be more expensive and a bit harder to come by, but the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super is the clear winner for us. We probably should have gotten this 2070 when the RTX generation first launched. The designers just threw in an RTX 2080 with some cores disabled. This card is still worth waiting for and is better than the 5700 XT.

The Nvidia RTX 2070 card offers performance levels that can match the RTX 2080 – the card introduces several useful new features, such as a cooler-sounding and quieter fan component. Its fps setting rate exceeds the performance of the 5700 XT on average. However, higher quality work comes at a higher price.

For users who already have a FreeSync display, don’t have the budgetary flexibility to spend as much money, and don’t mind giving back about 10-20% of performance quality (before overclocking), you’ll find a great tool in the 5700 XT. .

We also recommend that you wait to see what new card will be released in the near future. Well worth it compared to buying an old card. The RTX 3000 and RX 6000 cards are much better than last-gen offerings, but they’re just as hard to find.
