ymgerman/123RFI That’s almost too ironic to be true. Pornography gives smartphones a virus, a virus that locks out its owners. According to a new report from cybersecurity firm ESET, apps pretending to be from Pornhub are infecting mobile devices with malware that blocks users from accessing their devices and demands a ransom to set them free.
Since the Google Play Store prohibits Pornhub from having an official app in its database (it doesn’t allow pornographic material to appear on its software distribution platform), people are apparently being tricked into looking elsewhere and downloading apps that may look like what they’re looking for, but are actually much more dangerous. The result is that users feel that they need to repair their smartphone.
When you download one of these apps, it first tells you that you should check your phone for viruses before playing illegal videos. But instead of checking, of course, a virus is actually installed. Once the malware enters a cell phone through one of these malicious apps, it installs ransomware that locks your phone and asks you to pay $100 in Bitcoins to release it from a hostage situation.
ESET has published a series of guidelines instructing smartphone owners on how to avoid this type of malware and has also provided instructions on how to get rid of the virus if you have already been a victim. For example, you can put your device in safe mode, which blocks third-party apps, and “in case the app has been granted device administrator rights”, you’ll need to revoke access to the app before deleting it to ensure everything is removed.
