Those living or holidaying in the UK should be prepared for a nationwide mobile phone alert taking place today that will have your phone ringing loudly. The alert, scheduled for Sunday, April 23, is a simple test of the government’s emergency alert system, so there is no cause for concern. However, make sure you are prepared for it. Otherwise, you may be caught off guard.
National alarms are not something new; we have seen them used over the years, broadcast on radio and television stations. But as the world has become more reliant on smartphones, emergency alarms have had to catch up with the technology of the day, hence today’s test, which will coincide with some major national events, such as the London Marathon 2023 and Premier League football.
Alerts like these can be used to warn citizens of potential threats in their area, including natural disasters, terrorist attacks, or missing children. However, a schedule for today is only tentative, so those who get it shouldn’t worry. In fact, the UK has been testing regional alarms for a long time, so this is just to see how the alarm will perform when it’s sent to everyone in the country.
The UK Cabinet announced in a YouTube video last month that the alarm would go off and that residents shouldn’t panic when it happens. Expect the alarm to go off at 15:00 BST with a message saying: “This is a test of Emergency Alerts, the UK government’s new service that will alert you if a life-threatening emergency occurs nearby.”
Please note that even if your phone is set to silent or vibrate, you will still receive a notification that will trigger the alarm. To mute it, just select it Discard either Alright or any text box that appears when the alarm sounds.
If you don’t want to receive an alarm, you can temporarily turn off emergency alerts in your phone’s settings. just open settings app and search urgent warnings. You should find a switch that is on by default, so if you don’t want to be disturbed, you can turn it off. You can also put your phone in airplane mode to avoid the alert.
The list of phones that receive the alert includes those running Android 11 or later or iOS 14.5 or later. This means that all new devices purchased in recent years, regardless of manufacturer, should sound when the alarm is raised by the government. Tablets and other devices that have cellular connections should also receive alerts when the time comes.
As mentioned above, there is nothing to worry about with this particular alarm as it is just a test. However, it might not be a bad idea to set a reminder alarm for today at 14:00 BST, so you know when to anticipate it and not panic. Theater and live event attendees are encouraged to turn off their devices prior to arrival to minimize the amount of interference.
