YouTube recently announced a series of changes to its video viewing interface. One of those changes is a new feature known as Ambient Mode.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through what Ambient Mode is on YouTube and show you how to enable or disable it.
What is ambient mode on YouTube?
Ambient mode is basically a lighting effect that surrounds a particular YouTube video with a soft, glowing light that generally reflects the colors displayed in the video. The effect is somewhat reminiscent of the glow of a TV screen in a room with the lights off (which YouTube says was the inspiration for the effect). YouTube also said that Ambient Mode should make the experience of watching videos in dark mode “more immersive.” Ambient Mode was officially announced at the end of October 2022 and is available on the web, Android, and iOS.
When it comes to ambient mode, it’s best to see it in action to understand it. Here’s a video from YouTube’s official announcement of the feature, showing what the video will look like before and after Ambient Mode is enabled:
On the left, before you enable Ambient Mode, you’ll notice that the background of the video player is a flat, black screen. But on the right, once ambient mode is enabled, the background of the video player at the top of the screen glows a bright pink/red hue that reflects the colors of the video. It’s ambient mode: a color-changing glow effect for video playback.
How to enable ambient mode

Ambient mode is only available if YouTube dark theme is enabled. This means that you will need to enable the dark theme first. After turning on the dark theme, ambient mode will be enabled automatically. Here’s how to turn on the dark theme:
In Internet:
Go to YouTube.com and sign in to your account if you haven’t already. Then choose: yours Profile > icon Look > dark theme either Use a device theme (if your device is currently running in dark mode).
On Android and iOS:
Open the app. Then choose: yours Profile > icon settings > In general > Look > dark theme either Use a device theme (if your device is currently set to dark mode).
How to turn off ambient mode

Ambient mode should be soft and smooth, but if it bothers you, you can still turn it off. The procedure for disabling ambient mode is almost the same for web, Android, and iOS:
In the video you are currently watching, select settings gear icon Then select from the menu that will appear ambient mode of operation to turn it on and off. (On the web there is an actual switch next to ambient mode of operation which you will choose.)
Disabling the feature for one video seems to disable it for all videos you watch in the future. So if you want Ambient Mode to come back on, you’ll need to turn it on the same way you turned it off.
