It’s been almost four years since THAT Laurel or Yanny clip split the internet, and to be honest, we still hear something different every time it plays.

The sound, which garnered more than 2.2 million likes on TikTok, represents a crowd of thousands chanting the same thing.

But people are seriously divided on what they’re really saying.

According to TikToker Kegan Stiles, options include “Bart Simpson bouncing,” “that’s annoying,” or “spinning pirate ship.”

Alternatively, other people hear “lobsters on the move,” “pharmacy elbows,” “martian junim,” “baptism hack,” and “that’s not funny.”

Needless to say, the chant left viewers divided, with most viewers saying that it changed depending on what they were reading at the time.

One commented, “Everything I read while listening, I listen to.”

Another added: “I’ve heard them all!”

Meanwhile, a third asked: “How come it all sounds the same?”

As Diana Deutsch, a professor of psychology at the University of California, previously pointed out, this audio illusion is just one example of the difference between physically hearing something and hearing and understanding it.

In a 2009 article, he wrote: “These illusions show that the auditory system does not faithfully transmit sound information when it reaches our ears, but instead changes and rearranges that information in different ways.”

In other words, it is our brain that assigns meaning to the things we have heard, and this shows how easily it can be fooled.

So what is the crowd really singing? Well, it appears to have been taken from a football game where the fans collectively yelled “that’s embarrassing”.

For more viral stories, this woman sparked a debate by asking if the toaster should be cleaned after every use and it made people VERY angry.

And this man’s noisy neighbors wouldn’t stop driving his car noisily, for which he got the BEST revenge.
