Tripura’s School on Boat Drive
Tripura’s Boat School: The Tripura City Department of Education has launched a new initiative called ‘Boat Schools’ to close the unequal education gap in the remote islands of Lake Dumboor in Dhalai district. This initiative will provide education to students who have difficulty getting to school due to poor road connectivity in their area.
The Director of Secondary Education, Chandni Chandran, emphasized the importance of meeting the educational requirements of students living on the small islands of Lake Dumboor. To overcome this challenge, Karbook schools – Dakmura Gomatibari SB are playing a leading role. The situation calls for immediate action as students have to rely on unsafe boats, which sometimes lead to accidents.
The School Boat Project improves access to education for students from tribal communities
Chandni Chandran, State Project Manager (SPD) of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan told PTI, “The Dakmura Gumati Senior Primary School has 100 students, but the attendance rate is poor due to communication congestion. About 50 students come from various islands of Lake Dumbur and often do not go to school because they cannot afford the cost of travel because boats are the only means of communication.”
Damodar Tripura, coordinator of block project Samagra Shiksha, came up with a great solution to help students in a remote village access education. He intends the boat to be exclusively for student use, and funding for the project is provided through the Access component of Samagra Shiksha. The boat is manned by a qualified driver from the local community and operates three times a day to transport students to and from school.
More than 100 students have registered at the school and about 50 will use the boat service. This makes it much safer and easier for students to get to school, and improves their access to education.
Coordinator of Block project designs school boats for tribal children
The concept of a school boat for tribal children was developed by the Block Project Coordinator (BPC). Chandran, who flagged the first school boat in front of the children and their guardians, said we have just supported by issuing Rs 1.20 lakh under Samagra Shika Abhiyan, which focuses on results-based education.
