Following this week’s total solar eclipse in the U.S., many people who witnessed the spectacular event are concerned they may have damaged their eyes by staring directly at the sun without adequate protection.
As a result, this optical illusion has been doing the rounds on the internet.
The simple process involves staring at this Amsler square grid, taken from the National Eye Institute, which tests your optic nerve.
It works better if you print it out, rather than look at it on a screen.
Cover up one eye, then stare at the dot sitting in the centre of the grid, then repeat this with your other eye.
You’ll know if you need to get your eyes looked at if any of the lines become wavy or go missing, or if you spot any other differences, such as strangely sized boxes, dark areas or blurry edges.

Getting an eye test at a high street optician could mean shelling out £20 or more – but you can actually get an eye test for free from Tesco, or by using this link at Vision Express.
If you’re under 16 (or 19 and in full-time education), over 60, or have a particular medical condition you may qualify for free eye tests, while they are free for everyone in Scotland.
Opticians are required by law to give you a copy of your prescription, so even if you have paid for it, don’t feel like you are now duty bound to spend a fortune on frames and lenses from the same optician.
