The DCU’s Teen Titans Movie Is Another Chance At Redemption For One Wasted DCEU Hero

Summary

  • The upcoming live-action Teen Titans movie could provide redemption for unfulfilled DCEU characters, like Robin.
  • Robin has been largely sidelined in the DCEU, but the DCU is finally taking his character seriously with upcoming projects.
  • Teen Titans will give Robin a chance to shine as more than just Batman’s sidekick, showcasing his leadership and solo hero skills.

The recently announced live-action Teen Titans movie will be another chance for an unfulfilled DCEU character to receive redemption in the DCU. The DCEU left many characters with wasted potential as it ended without giving many heroes closure or developing characters that had brief appearances. One hero done wrong by the DCEU was Robin. The only appearance by the Batman sidekick was in Batman V. Superman via a suit in the Batcave, including graffiti that inferred the Joker killed Robin. He was mainly used as an emotional justification for Ben Affleck’s Batman to be more isolated and violent.

Beyond that suit, there weren’t many references to Robin and the DCEU never tried to introduce a new Robin or Nightwing. Even outside the DCEU, Robin hasn’t had many opportunities to shine on-screen. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy only mentioned his name once, and Chris O’Donnell’s portrayal of Robin wasn’t received well in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Fortunately, the DCU is taking Robin seriously, as Teen Titans is the second project that he will be involved in.

Robin already has two projects set up for him in the DCU. Batman: The Brave and the Bold is the first Batman project in the DCU and will include the establishment of the Bat Family. This Robin will be Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul. The film’s details are still under wraps, but it will be directed by The Flash‘s Andy Muschietti. Even fewer details are available on Teen Titans, including the roster, but it would be surprising if the DCU made a Teen Titans movie that didn’t include Robin.

Both of these projects suggest that James Gunn and Peter Safran are committed to Robin. They want the DCU to establish the mentor-and-student relationship between Batman and Robin while also giving Bruce Wayne an even more complex identity as a father. Additionally, Robin will have a significant role in the DCU, especially after his absence from the DCEU. With Gunn’s mention of the Bat-family, it also means that Damien Wayne may not be the only Robin, and Nightwing and Batgirl could be involved in future projects.

Teen Titans Will Give Robin More To Do Than Being Batman’s Sidekick

Batman: The Brave and the Bold will establish the iconic Batman-Robin duo that comic book readers are familiar with. However, Teen Titans will allow Robin to be more than just Batman’s sidekick. Robin is often the team’s leader, and this film could show off his leadership skills and capability as a solo hero. It also allows him to interact with other heroes his age, making him more relatable and likable to audiences. His identity is often tied to Batman, and their relationship is essential to his character, but Teen Titans allows him to do more in the DCU.
