Tafari Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Virginia, was found dead in the Edgartown Great Pond on Monday, according to the police.

After getting a call about a man paddleboarder “who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged,” police had been searching the lake since Sunday night. He vanished into thin air.

The Obamas employed Campbell, who was in residence on Martha’s Vineyard. At the time of the incident, the Obamas weren’t at home.

“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” the pair said in a statement. Following reports from another paddleboarder that a guy had vanished in the water at Edgartown Great Pond, the search for the missing paddleboarder began on Sunday just before 8 o’clock in the evening.

The search was put on hold late on Sunday, however state police reported that on Monday morning at around 10am, sonar from a boat spotted the body about 100 feet (30 meters) from shore at a depth of about 8 feet (2.4 meters). Police reported that Campbell was not donning a life jacket.

Campbell is survived by his wife and their twin boys, according to the Obamas. The loss of a very beautiful guy is being mourned today, the pair stated, adding that they “join everyone who knew and loved Tafari – especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin – in doing so.”

In a press release, the Massachusetts State Police announced Campbell’s passing. Divers had pulled Campbell from a pond on Edgartown Great Road just before 10 a.m. ET.

“Just before 10 AM, Massachusetts State Police divers pulled the body of the missing paddle boarder from Edgartown Great Pond. The victim’s body was discovered by a Massachusetts Environmental Police Officer using side-scan sonar deployed from a boat, according to the statement. MSP Underwater Recovery Unit divers then made the recovery.

The victim is a 43-year-old guy, as was previously stated. Currently, his name is being kept a secret, but we intend to do so later today.

“The recovery was made at a depth of around eight feet, roughly 100 feet off the coast.

The State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police are conducting the investigation into the fatality, the statement ended.
