Oddly enough, the echidna was never seen or mentioned again after the opening scene, but the upcoming sequel has a chance to explain the echidna’s true intentions.

Sonic and his companion, Tails, a machine-leaning fox, face a dangerous dilemma to thwart the Robot Nick’s plans.
Throughout the trailer, many details show that the echidna race will Sonic Hedgehog 2. In the original game, Knuckles was the only surviving descendant of the Horde, and the Emerald Master was so sacred to the Horde that they sacrificed their lives to protect it. One particular detail in the trailer could be a clue as to why the echidna attacked Longclaw in the first movie. In a brief shot of Emerald Master’s sanctuary, an ornate owl can be seen in the background, suggesting that these images may represent Longclaw and allude to her past. linked her to echidnas.
The patterns on the walls of the sanctuary may suggest that Longclaw was an old ally of echidnas. With her compassionate attitude, it’s no wonder she helps their civilization flourish. If this is indeed the case, the owl-like image may have been created by echidnas to pay homage to Longclaw. Additionally, the echidna tribe’s belligerent temperament justifies Longpaw’s giving Sonic a portal summoning ring. Longclaw gave the rings to Sonic to use in case of danger and also to keep them out of Echidona’s hands. The Rings allow the user to open portals that transport them from world to world, which would make them invaluable to the Horde’s power-hungry conquests. By sending Sonic to Earth with the ring, Longclaw ensured that the Horde could not invade other worlds.
