Silvio Berlusconi News
The flamboyant media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, who served as Italy’s longest-serving postwar prime leader during a time marred by sex scandals and accusations of corruption, has passed away. He was 86.
Barely three weeks after being discharged from a prior course of therapy, Berlusconi was sent to a hospital in Milan on Friday. He had a history of heart problems, including a damaged valve that was replaced by doctors in 2016, and in 2020, after catching Covid-19, he was admitted to the hospital with a lung infection.
According to Alessandro Cattaneo, deputy coordinator for Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party, the former premier passed away on Monday morning, according to the television station RaiNews24.
One of the key players in Italian politics over the past three decades was Berlusconi. In the 1980s, he established a television empire before using theatrics and his knack for memorable sound bites to win three national elections.
In a nation where administrations frequently change, he led four separate cabinets for more than nine years, an extraordinary tenure. Even when his party was no longer the dominant force, he acted as kingmaker to bring center-right coalitions to power.
