Rukka Sombolinggi is the first woman who serves as Secretary General of AMAN whose full form is Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara. It is the world’s largest indigenous peoples’ organization. It is representative of more than 2200 communities and over 15 million people across Indonesia.

She was elected to this position in 2017. She served as the deputy to AMAN’s Secretary General on Policy Advocacy, Legal, and Politics. Rukka is a Toraja from Sulawesi. She is also a farmer, scholar, leader, and activist.

Rukka Sombolinggi is a Torajan who belongs to the highlands of Sulawesi which is a starfish-shaped island the size of Florida. She has been known for her fiery oratory and her dedication to the indigenous rights movements. 
Rukka was born in 1973 to the Toraja ethnic group in a family that was involved in the indigenous rights movement since the early 1990s. She was born in Sangalla which is a village in the highlands of Sulawesi. She is 50 years old and her parents were the host of a meeting that was held in 1993.

The meeting is often cited as the genesis of the movement in Indonesia. Due to the meeting, the Network of Defenders of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was formed. This network became one of the main groups that convened the first Congress of Indigenous Peoples in Indonesia in March 1999.
Rukka Sombolinggi completed her bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from the Hasanuddin University in Makassar, Sulawesi. She earned a master’s degree in Political science at the Univerity of Chulalongkorn in Bangkok, Thailand. At the University of Chulalongkorn, Rukka wrote her thesis on the political participation of indigenous women in Indonesia. 
Rukka is married to Mansur Labada with whom she has 4 children. Her husband is a fellow activist and leader of the Moronene ethnic group in Southeast, Sulawesi. Rukka and Mansur got married in 1994. Rukka’s husband was one of the founders of JAPHAMA and AMAN.
When she was married to Mansur, he forced her to not go out to make money becasue he wanted his wife would stay at home and take care of their children but she had to negotiate with him and convince him that she would take care of their children and her work managing her time.

When Rukka was pregnant with her 3rd child in August 1998, her husband was sent to Jaild for leading the resistance against the expulsion of the Moronene people who were removed from their ancestral lands in Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park by the local government and security forces. 
Now a difficult situation came in front of Rukka becaue she had to raise their children alone while fighting for her husband’s release and for the rights of the Moronene people. 
For all of this, she got support from her parents, her friends, and her fellow activists. She lives with her husband and their four children in a modest house in Bogor, West Java. She tries to balance her life between her family life and work life. 
Rukka Sombolinggi’s height is 5 feet 2 inches. Her weight is around 53 kg. She has a black eye and fair skin color. Her body measurements are 33-25-34 inches. 
Rukka joined AMAN which was represented in national and international forums by her. She left AMAN in 2007 and became a program specialist for the UNDP Regional Indigenous Peoples Programme at the UNDP Asia Pacific Regional Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.
She rejoined the AMAN in 2011 as a project manager and got the position of chair of the organizing committee of the fourth Indigenous Peoples Congress in Halmahera, North Maluku after a year rejoining AMAN. She had been a member of the executive council of the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact from 2009 to 2012.
She was selected as the secretary-general of AMAN in 2017 and became the first woman to serve in this position.
