What if everything you believe to be true about politics is actually a lie? What if there are no real votes in America, or not enough to elect the next president? What if the Democratic candidate’s identity didn’t really matter? What if there is no so-called “center” and the ruling party can rule however they want for two years because the outcome of the first midterm elections will be terrible no matter what even? What if the Democrats won a 41-seat majority in the 2018 midterm elections not because candidates prioritized healthcare and everyday issues, but because they campaigned against government again? What if the outcome in 2020 is essentially predetermined?

All of that is certainly true, according to political scientist Rachel Bitecofer, who could be one of the most compelling new voices in this year’s political forecast.

Prior to November 2018, Bitecofer, a 42-year-old professor at Christopher Newport University in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, was barely recognized in the male-dominated field of online political forecasting.

Despite the shaky predictions of other forecasters in the final days of the election, she then correctly predicted the size and nature of the Democrats’ victory in the House. Also, she gave her forecast in July and stayed with it even as polls changed during the summer and fall.

At this point, however, her model predicts that Democrats will almost certainly win the White House in 2020, get more seats in the House and have a good chance of returning to the Senate. If she is right, economic periods, tenure and achievements in government have disappeared from politics. Her research is nothing more than “overturning broad notions of electoral theory,” as Bitecofer puts it with characteristic vulgarity.

In this regard, Bitecofer argues that changes in voter choice are more likely to affect current US elections than changes in voter preferences. Some detractors consider her to be an extreme supporter of the “votes explains it all” adage, riding a long victory lap after hitting big once. She offers a slightly different view, arguing that the recent election proves that American politics has indeed evolved and that other scholars have been slow to realize its implications.
