Rabindranath Tagore: Early Life and Childhood
He was born on May 7, 1861 into the family of Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi at Jorasanko Villa, the hometown of the Tagore family in Kolkata (Calcutta). He is the youngest among his siblings. He lost his mother at a very young age, his father was a tourist so he was raised mostly by servants and housekeepers. He was part of the Bengal Renaissance at a very young age and his family was also actively involved in it. At the age of eight he began to write poetry, and at the age of sixteen he also began to compose works of art and began to publish his poems under the pseudonym Bhansimha. In 1877 he wrote a short story ‘Bhikharini’ and in 1882 he wrote a collection of poems ‘Sandhya Sangit’.
He was influenced by Kalidasa classical poetry and began to write his own classical poems. His sister, Swarnakumari, is a famous writer. In 1873, he toured with his father for several months and gathered knowledge on a number of subjects. He studied Sikhism while in Amritsar and wrote about six poems and many articles about the religion.

His traditional education began in Brighton, East Sussex, England, at a public school. In 1878, he went to England to become a lawyer to fulfill his father’s wish. He was not very interested in school and later joined University College London to study law, but dropped out and taught himself various works of Shakespeare. He also learned the essence of English, Irish and Scottish literature and music; he returned to India and married Mrinalini Devi.

In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore founded an open-air school. It is a prayer room with marble floors and is called ‘Mandir’. It is also known as ‘Patha Bhavana’ and starts with just five students. Classes here are held under a canopy of trees and follow the traditional teaching method of Guru-Shishya. This teaching trend has revived the ancient teaching method that has proved to be good compared to the modernized method. Unfortunately, his wife and two children died, leaving him alone. He was very upset at that time. Meanwhile, his works began to develop and become more popular among Bengali as well as foreign readers. In 1913, he was recognized and received the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature, and became the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize. Now Shantiniketan is a famous university town in West Bengal.
