On October 18, 2022, separate juries hearing the case jointly in Monterey County District Court found Paul Flores guilty of first-degree murder and his father, Ruben Flores, not guilty of accessory to crime after the fact. Rubén Flores faced a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
A juror in the Ruben Flores case told Judge O’Keefe that he had discussed the matter with his priest for “spiritual guidance” because it was “stressing him out.” That juror was fired and another was sworn in, allowing deliberations to continue.
