If you see the face of a man or a mouse, you are correct in both cases. But why does it look like a human face to some and a mouse to others?
The answer lies in the top-down processing theory proposed by British psychologist Richard Gregory.
According to this theory, our eyes collect a lot of information in the form of stimuli, but by the time it reaches the brain, much of that information has been lost. As a result, perception is created that is not exactly what our eyes see.
But as our brain grows over time, it filters out things it can’t understand to quickly make decisions, or in this case, decide if it’s a human face or a mouse face.
To make decisions, our brains create hypotheses based on our knowledge of the world around us, which is not always the case.
As our brain focuses more on the image, it gathers more information and thus can understand that an image that looks like a human face can also be a mouse face and vice versa.
That’s enlightenment, isn’t it?
