New Kindle Scribe update adds a long-awaited feature

The Kindle Scribe is the first of a new kind of Kindle: an eBook reader that doubles as a note-taking device with an attached stylus. It’s a surprisingly good device and one of our favorite devices of 2022.

Now a new update means it’s about to get even better. Coming April 24, an over-the-air update will make it easier to send documents to your Kindle Scribe and will also add the ability to view multiple pages of notes and eBooks at once, as well as improvements to PDF readability.

The main feature of this update is the ability to share documents directly from Microsoft Word to your Kindle Scribe. This functionality was teased back in September when Scribe was announced, but has been MIA ever since. Now it is finally ready to use.

Available in the Microsoft Word desktop and browser apps, you can send a document either as a printed document (so you can edit the document on your Scribe) or as a Kindle book (so you can add handwritten sticky notes instead). This feature is sure to be a hit with proofreaders and editors of long-form content, who will be able to send long documents to their Scribe and read them in the comfort of a chair rather than at a desk.

The feature will be available in Microsoft Word’s Windows app on Monday, April 24, with web and macOS support coming later. To test it, open the document, then select File > Export (either Share) > Send to Kindle. then you can choose As a printed document to write on the page and edit with Scribe, doc Like a Kindle book instead, use handwritten sticky notes. You’ll still be able to send documents to other Kindles, but only Scribe will have the option to edit or add sticky notes.

The update also includes a new view for your laptop. In-Notebook Birds Eye View (BEV) takes full advantage of Scribe’s large screen and displays nine notebook pages at a time, allowing you to manage your notebooks quickly and easily. Users will also be able to add or insert pages and move or remove individual pages from this view. Similarly, eBook reading has been updated to take advantage of the larger screen, as you’ll now be able to choose a two-column view while reading in landscape view, giving you a more traditional “book” feel while reading on your Scribe.

Finally, Amazon is also adding some improvements to PDF reading with the inclusion of a contrast slider, improving PDF readability, and making it easier to read, write, and edit comments you’ve made to PDFs.

This is just the latest in a series of updates for the Kindle Scribe, so it’s likely that Amazon still has more up its sleeve when it comes to this device. If you’re looking for a Kindle, check out our list of the best Kindles.
