Mimi Parker, longtime member of the indie rock band Low, died on November 5 at the age of 55. She passed away after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Her husband and bandmate Alan Sparhawk announced the tragic news. The band also paid tribute to her on Instagram, writing:
“Guys, it’s hard to put the universe into words and a short note, but she died last night surrounded by family and love, including yours.” Keep her name close to your heart and sacred. Share this moment with someone who needs your help. The most important thing, of course, is love. – Alan”
Low was originally a trio from 1993 to 2020, with four different bassists. Mimi has been a member of the band since its inception.

Mimi Parker died Saturday of ovarian cancer. She was first diagnosed with the condition in 2020. She even mentioned it earlier this year on Sheroes Radio, saying that when individuals are diagnosed with such problems, they wonder why should it be me? She continued, saying she never asked herself the same questions because they came up randomly:
“Our time is limited, so what should we do with the time we have?” “Our goal is to make every day count.”
The band postponed a number of European dates in August 2022 to allow Parker to receive treatment and last month announced that the European tour had been canceled altogether. The band announced on social media that recent discoveries and modifications in therapy have made long-term travel impractical. They continued:
“We hope he will respond to the new therapies and be able to perform at the shows we have planned for the fall, including the Water is Life festival in Duluth on September 4. .” We apologize for the inconvenience caused by ticket transfers and travel/change costs. As we hope and pray for you all, we appreciate your good hopes and prayers. Thank you very much, peace. – Short.”

Mimi Parker was born in Minnesota and grew up in a musical family. Mimi’s mother was a country singer. In an interview with Terry Gross for Fresh Air in 2005, she said that her task was to come up with the harmony because she and her sister sang the lead vocals. Mimi says she learned to listen and create harmonies from the very beginning. She was a member of the high school orchestra, where she played the drums. Mimi Parker first met Alan Sparhawk in 4th grade, and they started dating in high school. A few years later, the couple married and Alan formed Low with bassist John Nichols. In an interview with NPR last year, Parker said:
“Honestly, if it weren’t for the marriage, the family… we wouldn’t have lasted this long as a band.”
Low’s first album, I Can Live in Hope, was released in 1994, and since then, albums like Long Division, I Can Live in Hope, Secret Name, Kranky, Trust and others other followed.
