Jacob Dufreche was born to Julie Aime and Lucien Dufreche. Julie worked as a teacher in the Archdiocese of Baton Rouge. Additionally, she served as band director at Holy Spirit Catholic School. Jacob is the grandfather of Edward Brent Dufreche. He was born on January 8, 1922, and attended Ponchatoula High School.
Edward is a graduate of LSU and LSU Law School. He served in World War II from 1942 to 1945 in North Africa and Italy with the 338th Field Artillery Battalion, 88th Infantry Division. He was also awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic service in the combat zone. He also served in the Korean Conflict as a gunnery instructor at Fort Sill, OK. After graduating from law school, he returned to Ponchatoula to open his own law practice and later served as Ponchatoula’s city attorney. During that time he had the honor of arguing a case before the Supreme Court of the United States.
In addition, Edward later served as Hammond City Court Judge from 1973 to 1979, Assistant District Attorney in 1966 and in 1980 became Judge of the Twenty-First District Court, Division “E”, until his retirement in 1997. In 1954, he was a founding member of 7th Ward General Hospital (now known as North Oaks Health Systems), serving on its Board of Directors for fifty years, retiring in 2004 as Chairman Emeritus.
Additionally, he served forty years on the Tangipahoa Parish Library Board, after which he retired as Library Board Emeritus. A lifelong member of the Ponchatoula Kiwanis Club, he was elected lieutenant governor of Louisiana, Mississippi and West Tennessee counties, and was a driving force behind the founding of the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce.
He died on September 1, 2015 at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Ruth Dufreche, of Springfield, LA.
