Mark Wahlberg’s New Movie Box Office Races For Top 3 In Debut Week

Summary

  • Arthur the King is expected to premiere at No. 3 with $8 million.
  • The Mark Wahlberg movie fell behind the holdover hits Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4.
  • However, it outperformed every other new title released the same weekend.

The Mark Wahlberg movie Arthur the King is racing toward the Top 3 in its opening weekend. The new release is based on the 2016 Mikael Lindnord non-fiction book Arthur – The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home. Featuring an ensemble cast that also includes Simu Liu, Juliet Rylance, Nathalie Emmanuel, Ali Suliman, Bear Grylls, and Paul Guilfoyle, the movie follows a group of competitive mountain climbers who befriend a stray dog that provides them with support and fuels their determination.

Per Deadline, the Arthur the King release is projected to debut at the domestic box office with a 3-day opening weekend total of $8 million. This will place it at No. 3 on the domestic chart for the weekend behind the holdover hits Dune: Part Two at No. 2 and Kung Fu Panda 4 at No. 1. However, it has outperformed every other title that debuted the same weekend, including The American Society of Magical Negroes, Snack Shack, One Life, and Knox Goes Away.

How Arthur the King Compares to Other 2024 Dramas

Although the movie did not make it to No. 1 on its opening weekend, this wasn’t entirely a surprise. The Arthur the King true story makes for a smaller-scale drama that wasn’t necessarily designed to compete with a science fiction epic starring Timothée Chalamet and a new sequel in a high-grossing animated franchise. However, in spite of that, this opening weekend total already makes it the 27th highest-grossing movie on the domestic chart for 2024 so far.

The titles that are topping the chart include bigger blockbusters such as Dune: Part Two, Wonka, and The Beekeeper, which is par for the course for the modern movie marketplace. However, the Arthur the King movie fares much better when compared solely to other 2024 dramas without genre elements. Among movies with a similar scope released this year so far, the Wahlberg movie is No. 4. Below, see how it compares to the highest-grossing titles in its genre:

While Arthur the King can’t compete with the runaway hit Bob Marley biopic, it is performing quite well when compared to other similar titles. It remains to be seen if its box office can climb significantly higher, however. With big blockbusters including Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire set to debut over the next two weeks after its debut, it will have to face off against considerable competition.
