Who is Jonathan Toebbe?
Jonathan Toebbe, a Navy nuclear engineer with access to military secrets, has been arrested on charges of trying to pass information about the design of US nuclear-powered submarines to someone he believed to be a representative of a foreign government. However, that individual turned out to be an undercover FBI agent according to the Department of Justice.
The criminal complaint alleges that he sold nearly a year’s worth of data to a contact he believed to be a foreign power. However, the court document did not include information about the country to which it sold the data. The FBI arrested a West Virginia couple. A flash drive at a pre-arranged “deadlock” in Jefferson County served as a clue to the pair.
According to the FBI, the scheme began in April 2020. It sent a package of Navy documents to a foreign government. He also shared his interest in selling operations manuals, performance reports, and other sensitive information. The package ended up in the hands of an FBI law office in a foreign country that had a return address in Pittsburgh.
The undercover FBI arranged for Jonathan to send $10,000 worth of cryptocurrency, citing it as a sign of goodwill and trust. He arrived at the mentioned place in West Virginia where his wife Diana Toebbe served as a lookout. The FBI paid $20,000 during the sting operation.
In August 2021, the FBI even paid nearly $70,000 in eastern Virginia during a no-trade trade.

Jonathan Toebbe’s career
Before we jump into Jonathan Toebbe’s career, let’s first go over his academic qualifications. After graduating from high school, Jonathan entered Emory University in 1997, where he studied physics and mathematics. He earned his bachelor’s degree with a 3.83 grade point average in 2001. Immediately after that, he continued his pursuit of a master’s degree.
In 2004, Jonathan earned a master’s degree in physics with an average grade of 3.83. After a four-year hiatus from academia, he joined the Colorado School of Mines in 2008, where he earned a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering in 2012 with a 3.98 GPA.
Now in his career, after earning his master’s degree from Emory University, Jonathan joined Georgia State University’s Perimeter College in 2005. He worked there for five months, where he worked as a laboratory instructor and assistant professor. Next, he also joined the Cobb County School District, where he worked as a physics teacher.
Additionally, Jonathan Toebbe worked at the Kent Denver School for almost three years as a physics teacher.
However, Jonathan has worked for Naval Reactors since November 2012. While there, he oversaw the conduct of fundamental physics testing on new construction and operational submarines and aircraft carriers. He coordinated with government contractors, shipyard personnel, and naval forces to ensure the safety, performance, and on-time delivery of the reactor.
