The Jon Batiste family
The Jon Batiste family is a famous family of musicians based in Louisiana. His grandparents were John Jeffery “Jeffey” Jean-Batiste and Estella Mae Batiste (née Curtis). His grandfather was born in 1913 of Cajun French roots and is a native of New Iberia. Meanwhile, his wife Estella was born on June 9, 1915 and grew up in Georgia, but her ancestry is unknown.
Jon’s grandfather was the son of Eraste “Earnest” Jean-Batiste and Eva Elizabeth Jean-Batiste. While his grandmother was the daughter of Garnett Curtis and Ella Ann Curtis.
His grandparents were the first African-American businessmen in the Ninth Ward, owning a grocery store and a hardware store. When his uncle David was 17 years old, his grandfather bought the children a piano, but their grandmother Estella was the family’s musical engine. She taught her children music and is credited with creating the Batiste Brothers Band. But before that, David’s band was called David and Gladiators.

Jon lost his grandfather John on June 27, 2012 at the age of 99, while he lost his grandmother Estella on September 6, 2007 at the age of 92.

Suleika shared that the suddenness of the “little, beautiful, little ceremony” meant they managed without formal rings. “We use bread ties,” he said.
He also talked about his plans to propose to her. She shared: “He told me, ‘I just want to be very clear, I’m not proposing to you because of that diagnosis. It took me a year to design your ring. So I know this time it has nothing to do with it. But what I want you to know is that this diagnosis doesn’t change anything. It’s clearer to me that I want to commit to this and be together.’ But when we realized we had that little window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to give it a try.”
They got her marriage license in less than a minute while she was in surgery with a catheter inserted into her chest.
There were four people at her wedding. She revealed, “It was private. He was little. And he was perfect.”
As she shared on a podcast, they met at a band camp in upstate New York when she was 13 and he was 15. They’ve known each other ever since, but have been in a relationship for eight years.
