At the time, Jack Dickey was a college student with a passion for sports and working part-time between studies and was “way behind” on his term paper. He was busy debunking one of the biggest and weirdest stories to ever hit the world of sports. He co-wrote the fake Manti Te’o story for dead vortex with Timothy Burke.
As the story goes, it all started with a tip. Manti received a lot of media attention in the fall of 2012 when she said that her grandmother and her girlfriend died within hours of each other. But the girl never existed.
“I was at home in Guilford when we got the tip as personal,” Dickey said. Then Craggs and [managing editor] Tom Scocca fixed the thing Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and then we were basically good to go.”
Speaking further about the working relationship with Timotej, he said thepostgame, “Burke and I split and won on both reporting and writing. In addition to reporting, Burke took over social media, while I focused on Kekua’s media coverage, both on broadcast and in print. Then, as we began to get a fuller picture of the characters involved, on Monday morning or so, Burke found the woman in Lennay’s photos and some of the people who claimed Ronaiah Tuiasosopo was behind the scam”.
Jack added: “At the same time, I was trying to piece together Ronaiah Tuiasosopo’s life story and trying to find people who knew him. Burke got a lot more breaks than I did in this process. He had several people talking to him; I made probably 20 calls and left several messages on Facebook and only got one guy on the phone. (He really wanted to talk to Ronaiah, but he didn’t respond to me or Craggs).”
They published the article on January 16, 2013. The story became international breaking news.
“It was a surprise,” Dickey said. “We thought it would be a great college football story that would have a big impact in the sports media. It had a much bigger impact beyond what we did not expect.” By February 2013, the story had been viewed 4 million times. As a co-author, he received international exposure that followed countless interviews and even several television appearances.
“I played all the trashy tabloid shows like Inside Edition, Extra and Access Hollywood,” says Jack. “The team was on Anderson Cooper and MSNBC.” He understood that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
At the time, Jack explained: “I will never get over this. I do not think that’s possible. This is the biggest story in the history of this website. … For us to have news like this again, I can’t foresee it happening again. Of course I would like it to be.
