Cheryl Tweedy, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts dedicated the new song to bandmate Sarah Harding who died of cancer in 2021 aged 39.

The reunion marks a remarkable comeback for the chart-topping group, dogged by rumours of feuds before they split in 2013.

A music source said: “This has been one of the best-kept secrets in pop, but it’s actually happening now.

“The girls really came back together as friends to rally around when Sarah died, and it repaired some of the old rifts and put things into perspective. Suddenly the reunion which had seemed totally impossible for so long just felt a totally natural thing to do — in Sarah’s honour.”

The four bandmates arrived in separate cars at a North London studio, wearing caps and shades to avoid being recognised.

The video for their new single — the band’s first in 11 years — sees the girls playing superhero characters complete with Wonder Woman-style costumes and capes.

The band — formed in 2002 on ITV talent show Pop Stars: The Rivals — are reported to be thrilled to be back working together.

And they are said to be planning to make more music — before taking it out on the road.

The insider added: “They’ve got a single and a video in the can, plans for a full record of new music, and for the fans the most exciting thing will be a massive reunion tour in 2024.

“It’s going to be huge — and they’re all very excited to be back working together, even if there is a bittersweet element to it.

“Of course, whatever they do, there will always be nods to Sarah’s contribution to the group, too.”

Millions of viewers saw the five members of Girls Aloud chosen as finalists by ITV Pop Stars judges Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.

They went on to beat boyband counterparts One True Voice — then landed the coveted Christmas No 1 slot with their debut single, Sound of the Underground.

A glittering career saw them achieve a record 20 consecutive top ten singles, including four No 1s, and five Brit Award nominations.

However the band then announced they were taking a break to pursue other projects in 2009.

The girls were the subject of repeated rift rumours — with Cheryl, Nicola and Kimberley forming a close trio and clashing regularly with Nadine and Sarah.

Their next single, Something New, did not materialise until November 2012, when they reunited for a tenth anniversary tour.

They then announced they were splitting for good after their last concert in March 2013 — to the apparent surprise of Nadine.

She later claimed she had been blindsided by the other four girls’ decision to end the band without consulting her.

Nadine said she was only told minutes before going out on stage for their final performance at their Ten: The Hits Tour. She added: “I didn’t want the band to end, it was as simple as that.

“I didn’t think we were going to end – and then on the very last night of the tour our management and publicist came up to me and said the girls wanted to split up the band. I was thinking, ‘What?!’”

She added: “I screamed and cried on stage and off.”

A statement announcing the break-up was released by the group just minutes after their final date.

In a statement they told their army of fans: “Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts, ‘Thank you’!

“This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade.

“It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter! Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together. Love you lots.”

Girls Aloud would make household names of each of their members, especially Cheryl who became Britain’s best-known pop star of the period thanks to her stunning looks and high-profile love life.

She also had the most successful solo music career out of the band, landing five No 1 singles and two No 1 albums.

The mum of one has been married twice, first to former England and Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole and then nightclub promoter Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini.

She was also a judge on X Factor and the face of major fashion and beauty brands including L’Oreal.

Kimberley has enjoyed a successful stage career since the band split and nearly won Strictly, while Nadine and Nicola both released solo records.

Sarah broke into acting during the band’s hiatus, starring in 2009 flick St Trinian’s 2. After the split she appeared in Coronation Street and won Celebrity Big Brother in 2017.

In August 2020, she announced she had breast cancer which had spread.

Her memoir, Hear Me Out, was published in 2021, documenting her life, career and terminal diagnosis.

Last October the four remaining bandmates got together to honour Sarah at an emotional event in London.
