Although it may not be an all-knowing and all-seeing companion, artificial intelligence has advanced rapidly in recent years. AI chatbots have recently come into the spotlight, largely thanks to the emergence of ChatGPT, a chatbot from OpenAI, the creator of the amazing AI imager DALL-E 2.
AI chatbots are a lot of fun to play with and can create everything from poetry to new episodes of long-canceled TV shows. If you want to try ChatGPT on your iPhone, the good news is that there is now an official ChatGPT app for Apple mobile devices. A version for Android phones is also in the works; It’s not here yet, but there is still a way to access ChatGPT on your Android device. There are other similar apps that you can play with on both platforms.

How to use ChatGPT on your iPhone
OpenAI has released the official ChatGPT app, which is by far the best way to access the chatbot on your iPhone. Unfortunately, it’s only available on the US App Store for now, though it’s expected to be released in other countries soon.
Step 1 – Go to the app store and search for ChatGPT, the official OpenAI app, and select it Get to download and install it on your iPhone.

Step 2: Once installed, open the ChatGPT app.
Step 3 – When you use the ChatGPT app for the first time, you will need to sign in to an existing account or create a new one.
If you have previously used ChatGPT via a web browser, select Apply and follow the instructions in the app’s browser.

Step 4 – If you have never used ChatGPT before, choose one of the sign-in options to use your Apple ID, Google account, or sign in with your email address and password.
When registering for the first time, you will need to enter your first and last name, date of birth and mobile phone number to which you can send an SMS to confirm your account. While it’s easier to use your iPhone number, it’s not strictly necessary: you can use any number that is recognized as a cell phone number and can receive SMS messages.
You may need to use an alternate number in some cases, as ChatGPT blocks what it thinks are virtual phone numbers, VoIP numbers, or landline numbers. It’s a bit ironic for the AI Bot, but the database of numbers it uses isn’t entirely accurate; If ChatGPT doesn’t accept your iPhone number, you may need to try another number that belongs to a friend or family member and enter the code there. If all else fails, you can try some of the third-party ChatGPT apps we’ll discuss later, most of which don’t require you to verify your phone number with Open AI.

Step 5 – After verifying your mobile number, you will be returned to the main chat screen. Choose Message at the bottom to open the keyboard and start typing your chatbot message like you would in most other messaging apps.

Step 6 – When you are ready, select the up arrow button to send your message to ChatGPT and wait for your response.
Alternatively, you can select the small waveform button in the message field to dictate your message using your voice. This is similar in concept to the iPhone’s built-in dictation feature, but uses Open AI’s Whisper neural network for text-to-speech analysis instead of Apple’s.
The ChatGPT iPhone app isn’t perfect, but if you want the official ChatGPT experience on your iPhone, it’s still the way to go.

How to use ChatGPT on your Android phone
As mentioned, there is no official ChatGPT app on Android yet, but it is coming. However, for now, you can access the ChatGPT website through a web browser.
Step 1: Go to the OpenAI website.
Step 2: If this is your first time here, sign up for an account. If not, sign in.
Step 3 – If you’re logging in, you’ll need to use a mobile phone number to verify your account, so keep that handy. As we mentioned earlier, you can’t use a virtual phone number, VoIP number, or landline number, and ChatGPT could mess up, so if your primary phone number isn’t working, try asking a friend or family member if they can. . borrow their number to confirm that you are human. Alternatively, you can try one of the ChatGPT apps that we’ve summarized in the next section, as many of them don’t require the same level of user verification, or even in some cases.
Step 4: After registering or logging in, start typing your question. The home page offers some suggestions, but feel free to explore and even ask ChatGPT what it can do.

Best ChatGPT iPhone Apps
While ChatGPT is now officially available on the App Store, it’s still a pretty basic experience. If you’re looking for more features, there are plenty of other apps that take advantage of ChatGPT’s great capabilities that are worth checking out. Here are some of the best.
Genius – AI Chatbot
Genie is one of the best iOS ChatGPT options because it’s, well, absolutely loaded with features. You can ask it for almost anything, from identifying images, typing what you’re looking for, and even compressing PDFs or web pages. It’s amazing technology and it’s one of the few that has access to GPT-4, giving it those advanced image and file recognition capabilities.
Unfortunately, that means it’s not cheap. Free users only receive five questions (known as “wishes”) per day. If you want more than that, you will have to subscribe. Those subscriptions aren’t cheap either, so if you want more than five wishes a day, you’ll have to pay for them.
ChatOn – Chatbot AI Assistant
ChatOn is a bit basic compared to some of the other options, and it eschews some of the ChatGPT mainstays you’ll see in other apps, like dark and neon color schemes and hover text effects, but it does deliver on features. ChatOn can perform your usual chatbot tasks, but you can also pretend to be a sarcastic friend, create inspirational quotes, and any of a number of different options.
It’s not completely free, though, and unlimited use will cost you, with plans starting at $7 per month. It’s not as polished as other apps and we found some modes didn’t work particularly well, but it’s still a fun and cheaper option than similar apps.
Confusion – ask anything
The puzzle is one we’ve tackled ourselves, and it’s probably our favorite ChatGPT option on the iPhone. Not only is it extremely easy to use, just download and go, no login required, but it also tells you where you got the information from, and most importantly, it’s completely free. Yes, there is no subscription cost at all, which puts it ahead of many other ChatGPT iOS apps.
Best ChatGPT Apps for Android
The Google Play Store does not yet host the official ChatGPT app. However, some apps offer similar capabilities and most still use the ChatGPT architecture. Here are some good Android alternatives for the game:
New – ChatGPT AI Chatbot
It’s ChatGPT, but with a nicer interface and available as an app. That’s pretty much all there is to say about it, but we’d be lying if we didn’t mention that it does it very well. The neon color scheme matches the futuristic look of the AI chatbot, and the look of the scrolling text makes it look like you’re talking to a real person. We found it relatively fast and reliable, though some reviews complain about crashing issues with more complex questions.
Unfortunately, it comes with a subscription for unlimited access. Subscriptions start at $8 per month and give you unlimited Q&A, access to the GPT-3.5 Turbo model, and chat history.
ChatSonic – Super Chat GPT App
ChatSonic may work with ChatGPT, but it claims to be the only GPT-enabled chatbot that outperforms its benefactor. Not only does it connect to ChatGPT for evidence-based queries, but it also outputs images via DALL-E and can participate in voice conversations like Google Assistant. Merging these separate services into one service is probably the future of AI, but ChatSonic has it all.
However, like Nova above, ChatSonic has limitations. You are limited to a certain number of question and answer words per month, and you will have to pay to get more words. Subscriptions start at $10 per month for 40,000 words, and it will be quite expensive if you want more than that. Worse still, using it at peak times can cost twice as much. So while ChatSonic can do a lot, it also asks for a lot.
Bing – Your AI co-pilot
Granted, this one doesn’t work with ChatGPT, but it’s worth downloading and playing with, especially if you’re fighting the free limitations of other apps. Bing, the search engine that nobody uses, now comes with an AI chatbot and has some fun extras that you won’t find in ChatGPT. For example, you can set it to be more creative, more precise, or a balanced combination of the two. As a result, you may get some wacky answers or some more accurate ones. You’ll need to sign in to a Microsoft account and join a waiting list to access Bing’s AI capabilities, but we found we already had access when we signed up.
