How to turn on FSR on the Steam Deck

Steam Deck is great, but it still feels like a work in progress. The good news is that it is progressed since its release. Valve’s updates added much-requested features and new compatibility, and one of those updates helped improve performance and visual quality by introducing AMD’s Fidelity FX Super Resolution, or FSR.

If you’re having trouble balancing usable frames per second and acceptable resolution for your favorite games, especially when playing on a monitor, Steam Deck’s FSR support could make a world of difference.

If you want to get the most out of your Steam Deck, here’s how to enable FSR.

What is FSR in Steam Deck anyway?

FSR is a technology from AMD which stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution, and the latest version is FSR 2.0. Basically, it works to increase the resolution and optimize the resolution of your games so that they can run in more detail without compromising frames per second. This is especially useful for a system like the Steam Deck, which may have trouble reaching higher resolutions for certain games, especially if connected to a larger screen monitor. Valve has even reported that using FSR can significantly save Steam Deck battery life for certain games.

Some games have native support for FSR, but on Steam Deck, FSR can be enabled in settings to help with any game you play on the system. This is what you should do.

How to enable FSR on Steam Deck

Step 1 – While in the game you want to optimize, press QAM (Quick Access Menu) on the Steam Deck. It’s the “…” button on the right.

Step 2: In the menu, scroll down until you reach Performance section, marked with a battery icon.

Step 3: You Performance section, select it advanced view the ability to see all possible features.

Step 4: Scroll down until you reach scale filter slider Slide this all the way to the right to the setting that says FSR.

Step 5 – Note that just below this section there is an option to FSR sharpness. You can max for now. You might want to come back to this slider and play around with it later, especially if you’re having issues with frame rates in the game you’re upgrading.

Step 6: You’re not done yet. To enable FSR, open the game menu and look for an option to set the resolution, usually in the video or graphics section (below is where you can see half life 2). Set the resolution well below the original or default level, preferably 720p or lower. You have to lower the resolution for the platform to recognize the situation and launch the FSR. You should now be ready to play.

Step 7 – If you don’t notice any change in resolution at the same frame rate, check your display settings. Try turning full screen mode on and off to see if that helps. Keep in mind that you may have to play around with the resolution settings as well. FSR sometimes works better to increase frame rate and sometimes to increase resolution, with the best result often depending on the game you’re playing.
