Hogwarts Legacy PC: best settings, ray tracing, DLSS, and more

Hogwarts Legacy it brings the vast world of Harry Potter to a video game, and at a huge performance cost. It’s a beautiful game when it works well, but unfortunately, it often falls short. To help you optimize your performance, I’ve rounded up the best settings for Hogwarts Legacy.

In addition to optimizing your settings for high fps, I also looked at the game’s ray tracing, upscaling, and obscenely high RAM requirements so you know how to get the most out of your PC experience.

Hogwarts Legacy received a day 1 patch for PC that improved stability and fixed freezing issues. If you played the game during the early access period, be sure to update to get the latest performance fixes on PC.

The best settings for Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy includes a benchmark that will automatically apply recommended settings based on your hardware, but you shouldn’t rely on it. After a few hours of running around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, here are the best settings I found Hogwarts Legacy:

Hogwarts LegacyThe quality settings are misleading. As you can see in the screenshot above, there is very little difference between the Low, Ultra presets, and my recommended settings. These images were taken after a hard reset of the game to confirm that the changes were applied. The devil is in the details.

Hogwarts Legacy System Requirements

Hogwarts Legacy it has some high system requirements if you want to play with all the sliders maxed out. At a minimum, the game requires an Nvidia GTX 960 processor and an Intel Core i5-6600, but that’s only if you plan on playing the game at 720p with 30 frames per second (fps) and low graphics beforehand.

To get anything respectable, you’ll need at least an Intel Core i7-8700 and an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti. That’s quite a jump in power, and that’s just from playing the game at 1080p at 60fps. The developer also lists the Intel Arc A770 as a graphics option, which is a very solid GPU for this game (more on that later).

The Ultra and Ultra 4K claims have the same processor recommendation: Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X. The only thing that is different is the GPU. You’ll need at least an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti to game at 1440p, while the developer recommends jumping up to an AMD RX 7900 XT if you plan on gaming at 4K.

Although the minimum system requirements don’t seem like much, Hogwarts Legacy it quickly becomes more demanding as you go beyond 720p. To run the game, you’ll need one of the best gaming PCs you can buy. There is also a very interesting requirement in the four spec lists.

You need 16GB of RAM to play the game, and the developer recommends at least 32GB if you go beyond 1080p. Hogwarts Legacy joins the list of games with high RAM requirements in 2023, including the upcoming Return computer connection.

After it was originally announced that Hogwarts Legacy asked for 32 GB of RAM, it was a bit frantic. It is traditionally known that you need a maximum of 16 GB of RAM to play games on a computer. Hogwarts Legacy dispute that position.

It is a game that requires a lot of memory, both for system RAM and video RAM. At 1080p, 16GB of RAM is plenty for you, but you should seriously consider upgrading to 32GB of RAM if you want a higher resolution (our best RAM guide can help you with that).

At 4K, the game easily consumed almost 15GB of system memory, and around 11GB at 1440p. Both are less than 16 GB, of course, but it’s important to remember that other services, like Windows itself, consume memory even if Hogwarts Legacy it’s the only app it runs. Video memory is also an issue. At 4K, the game was about 13 GB with ray tracing turned on. That’s what makes the Intel Arc A770 an interesting choice, as it’s a relatively affordable GPU that still packs 16GB of memory.

Also, you can try clearing the shader cache and increasing its size. For Nvidia users, open the Nvidia Control Panel and go to Manage 3D settings. Hogwarts Legacy includes ray tracing in three flavors: ray traced reflections, ambient occlusion, and shadows. Along with the switches for each of the settings is an overall quality slider for the effects.

Most systems should leave air tracking disabled. Aid Hogwarts Legacy they look more realistic, but there is a big compromise in performance. Even with the RTX 4090 in command, my performance was cut in half when turning on ray tracing with the Medium quality preset.

What you get with ray tracing are slightly more realistic reflections and shadows. Shadows and ambient occlusion make the biggest difference, as you can see in the screenshot below. Shadows are sharper in the ray-traced version, and ambient occlusion helps add more depth. Ray-traced reflections look good, but only when you actually see them. Most surfaces are not reflective, but those that are show a big difference from ray-traced reflections. I recommend keeping them off anyway, but if you have the extra power they can make select parts of the game look more realistic.

Increase to Hogwarts Legacy

Nvidia NIS and FSR 1 in Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts LegacyIts rough performance on a lower-end system is saved primarily by its plethora of upgrade options. Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) from Nvidia, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) from AMD, and Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) from Intel are all available, but there are several variations of these three.

The game supports FSR 1 and 2, as well as Nvidia DLSS and Nvidia Image Scaling (NIS) if you have an Nvidia graphics card. As you can see in the screenshot above, NIS and FSR 1 greatly reduce the quality of the game, so you should avoid them if you can.

However, DLSS, FSR 2, and XeSS are solid options. Of the three, I recommend using DLSS if you have a supported graphics card (only worked on Nvidia RTX GPUs) and FSR 2 if you don’t. XeSS is a solid alternative to FSR 2, but it’s not as sharp as AMD’s scaling tool.

The only exception is if you have an Intel Arc A750 or A770. These graphics cards include dedicated cores that accelerate the fastest version of XeSS available on the hogwarts Legacy, so you should use that tool if you have Intel GPU.

In terms of performance, all three are tied, with DLSS having a slight advantage. The real push here is DLSS Frame Generation, which is available in Hogwarts Legacy if you have a compatible RTX 40 series GPU.
