Two successful autopsies determined that the cause of her death was a gunshot wound to the head.

Halee was fatally shot during her shift at the Texas Roadhouse in Evansville, about 15 miles from the crime scene, according to sources. She was invited to have a drink with her friends that night, but she declined, preferring to study in the library with her friend Ansley. But her mind changed when she went to see another friend named Jordan at 10pm to get her wallet. Jordan dated Thaddeus Rice, who was despised by his co-workers.
3) Thaddeus Rice was the first suspect in the murder of Halee Rathgeber.
Since police had no evidence in the early stages of the investigation, they questioned people close to the victim. Then, the name of Thaddeus Rice appeared as a suspect. Authorities revealed that Halee had been questioned in connection with a separate murder case involving the suspect and her alleged friend Rice. Thaddeus Rice was later identified as the prime suspect in the case because police felt that if Halee had disclosed information about Rice at that time, he would have had an ideal reason to kill her. When another suspect was identified during the investigation, he was quickly ruled out as the killer.

The investigation then turned to Isaiah Hagan, a friend of Halee Rathgeber who had a history of stealing or borrowing money. He allegedly said he dropped Halee at the soccer facility, where she was supposed to meet someone else. Hagan then said that he tried to call Halee around midnight, but she didn’t pick up.
A week after she was killed, the FBI, hired to help, obtained Halee Rathgeber’s cell phone data. The data revealed that their movements on the night of the crime were similar. At around 11pm, their phones were discovered while walking to the soccer field, after which Halee’s phone powered off. However, it came back on around 3:20am before shutting down.
5) Hagan’s mother testified at his second trial, which certainly contributed to his conviction.
Isaiah Hagan’s first trial ended in a mistake. During the second trial, his mother spoke in court, saying he admitted to her that he had accidentally shot Halee Rathgeber. She also told the court that Hagan threw the murder weapon in the trash. He was found guilty of three felony counts, including murder, obstruction of justice and robbery with serious bodily harm, based on his mother’s testimony and other substantial circumstantial evidence. In 2018, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison.
