Burns began his career in advertising and eventually became a television advertising executive. He’s also part of the team that created the iconic “Got Milk?” commercial campaign. Burns is known for writing scripts for films including The Bourne Ultimatum, The Informer! and Contagion, all starring Matt Damon. He also produced the Oscar-winning film An Inconvenient Truth. His big break in filmmaking came in 2019 with the release of The Report, a TV series starring Adam Driver about a secret CIA torture program.
In 2007, he directed an episode of the comedy show Californication called Filthy Lucre. Burns is known as the host, director, writer, and executive producer of the next Apple TV+ show.
