Evil Dead Rise Director Has A Spoiler Tattooed On His Arm

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin has a tattoo of one of the movie’s kills, but can’t show it because it’s a spoiler. 2013’s Evil Dead was the last attempt at reviving the classic horror movie franchise spawned in the 1980s by the great Sam Raimi. Now 2023’s Evil Dead Rise will take its own stab at bringing the Deadites back to life, with a story that transplants the action from a cabin in the woods to an apartment in the city of Los Angeles.

This change of setting may represent a major departure from the way the Evil Dead movies have always gone about doing their gory business. But as the new Evil Dead Rise trailer assures fans, demons can be just as big a problem in the city as they are out in the middle of the forest. That trailer indeed teases several very gnarly-looking moments from the new movie, but director Cronin assures fans there’s a lot that hasn’t yet been spoiled. One kill in particular is memorable enough that Cronin even had it tattooed on his arm – but he doesn’t want to show off his ink because the scene happens to be one that is being kept under wraps. Check out Cronin’s remarks to Empire in the space below:

“Ellie’s character is a tattoo artist in the story, which brings the tattoo gun into play. I’ve actually got one tattoo on my arm right now that’s a dreadful stick drawing of one of the kill moments in Evil Dead Rise – but I can’t show it yet because we haven’t spoiled that actual moment.”

What To Expect From Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise stars Lily Sullivan as Beth, a young woman who heads to Los Angeles to pay a visit to her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) and her three kids, who all live together in a cramped apartment. Things take a horrifying turn however when one of the kids discovers a mysterious book in the basement of the family’s building. Evil Dead fans will of course instantly recognize the mystery book as a copy of the Necronomicon. Soon enough, demonic forces have been unleashed and Beth and the kids must fight for their lives.

As previously mentioned, Evil Dead Rise tweaks the Evil Dead formula in one big way by switching the setting from the familiar cabin in the woods to the city. But Cronin’s movie also switches things up by introducing a family dynamic to the formula. The Evil Dead movies of course always featured groups of friends being possessed by demons, until by the end there was only one human left trying to fend off all the unleashed Deadites. Things may seem a little more terrifying in the new movie as Ellie’s young kids are subjected to the horrors let loose by the opening of the Necronomicon.

Moving things to the city and focusing on a family may feel like big changes to the Evil Dead formula. But as the first Evil Dead Rise trailer makes clear, the new movie doesn’t skimp at all when it comes to unleashing classic Evil Dead demonic mayhem. Several moments from the trailer have indeed already made waves among Evil Dead fans, including a particularly nasty scalping and some nastiness with a cheese grater. But if Cronin and his tattoo are any indication, there are plenty of unspoiled moments that will be even wilder and bloodier than what’s in the trailer.
