McKend’s gesture in such a situation was more than a simple fashion decision. Her revelation is seen as a cultural statement, despite the fact that she claims that the decision to wear a wig and then remove it is a personal matter. Weaving can cost up to $800.

McKend, a vivacious 27-year-old, has expanded the editorial reach of WCAX. She covered stories including the state’s first hijab practitioner from Norwich University, alleged racism by Bennington police, and one of the state’s first African-American ranchers . She has also gained a reputation as someone who pressures political leaders with tough questions. She’s “fearless,” according to her supervisor, WCAX executive producer Roger Garrity.
Curtiss Reed Jr., executive director of the Vermont Partnership for Equity and Diversity, summed up McKend’s strategy as follows: “If people judge her by her hair, they’re going to judge her by her hair. completely ignored her journalistic excellence. She received a full scholarship to attend the exclusive Lenox Birch Wathen School from Kindergarten to Grade 12. McKend persuades her high school classmates to engage in regular dialogues about diversity.
“I’ve been handing out flyers around the school. I’ll try to talk to the white kids at lunch and say, “Listen, you really have to do this, man.” People will roll their eyes when they saw me coming, she recalls, but eventually some young men started showing up.
McKend, a self-described “social butterfly” who was elected student council leader in his senior year, didn’t always feel comfortable at school. “I really had a lot of confidence issues as a black woman in that white environment,” says McKend. The white man she invited to the prom said he would come back to her. She said, “He never did.”
