Civil War Box Office Set To Topple 2 New Releases In Week 2, Including Henry Cavill’s Action Movie

Summary

  • Alex Garland’s Civil War is projected to earn $11 million in its second weekend at the domestic box office.
  • This total places it at No. 1 for the weekend, above Abigail and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
  • The movie is on its way to becoming one of A24’s biggest hits of all time.

Civil War is continuing its box office domination. The new movie, which is A24’s most expensive release to date with a production budget of $50 million, was written and directed by Alex Garland and follows a group of journalists documenting the skirmishes that take place on American soil when Western forces led by California and Texas attempt to secede from the union. The ensemble cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman. During its opening weekend, the movie earned the company’s highest-ever debut with $25.5 million.

Per Deadline, the Civil War box office will continue dominating the domestic market during its second weekend in theaters. At the time of writing, it is projected to close out Sunday with a 3-day domestic total of more than $11 million, which would place it at No. 1 on the chart for the weekend. This means that the holdover hit will have outgrossed several major wide-release titles that premiered the same weekend, including the Universal vampire horror-comedy Abigail and Guy Ritchie’s Henry Cavill war movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

How Civil War Compares To Other A24 Hits

Civil War Could Become The Company’s Biggest Hit Ever

This additional weekend haul should push the Civil War release to a cumulative total of roughly $45 million at the domestic box office alone. Even without updated numbers from international markets for its second weekend, this is enough to raise its worldwide total high enough for the movie to be considered the eighth highest-grossing movie that A24 has ever put out. However, it still has quite a way to climb if it is going to become the company’s highest-grossing movie ever.

It’s somewhat difficult to determine where the entire Civil War box office run will land on the overall A24 chart. While some of their highest-grossing movies, like Talk to Me and Hereditary, were given wide releases immediately upon their debut, others, like Lady Bird and their biggest-ever hit Everything Everywhere All At Once, debuted with limited releases before expanding into wide releases later on. This makes it difficult to compare their week 2 trajectories, but below, see a comparison of when Civil War and each of their Top 5 movies crossed the $45 million mark compared to their overall performance:

While Civil War has already outgrossed Moonlight and Lady Bird on the domestic front, its strength in international markets doesn’t compare to A24’s best performers. Perhaps because of its uniquely American subject matter, its international grosses form less than 15% of its total gross, which could prevent it from climbing as high as Everything Everywhere, which made 46% of its gross internationally. However, it is clear that the new movie will quickly become one of A24’s highest-grossing movies ever, even if it doesn’t become No. 1.
