Nintendo Switch Lite is a cheaper, sleeker, and more portable version of the original Nintendo Switch console, but can it connect to a TV? That’s a common question we want to answer, and it could be the deciding factor between buying a smaller version or investing in a bigger original model.

When you first look at the portable Nintendo Switch Lite, you’ll notice that it has the same USB-C port as the traditional Nintendo Switch. Looks good so far, right?

The big misconception is that USB-C supports everything, including video output. However, it is just an interface and the only guaranteed technology is USB 3.2. There’s enough power to run a mouse or other peripherals, but everything else from battery charging to video output is up to the device manufacturer.

So the simple answer is that the Switch Lite cannot send video to an external device. The USB-C port only supports USB 3.2 and power.

For those who want a more technical answer, here it is: The Switch Lite just doesn’t have the hardware.

Nvidia’s custom Tegra chip inside the traditional Nintendo Switch is an all-in-one solution that combines CPU and GPU cores. Like any other computing device with a built-in display, this chip uses the DisplayPort protocol to deliver uncompressed video to the console’s built-in display.

However, there is also a chip on the motherboard, a two-way matrix switcher, which routes USB 3.2, DisplayPort, and audio out through the USB-C port. According to the specifications, this chip can only route a USB 3.2 signal; two DisplayPort channels and one USB 3.2 lane; or four DisplayPort channels.

When you plug the Nintendo Switch into the dock, a chip inside the latter receives the DisplayPort and audio feed and converts it all to HDMI using the old Mobility DisplayPort standard. This data is then sent to the dock’s HDMI output.

In short, the two-way matrix switch installed in the traditional Nintendo Switch is simply not present in the Lite version. The lack of video output has nothing to do with the software.

Yes, but without using the dock that came with the traditional Nintendo Switch. Again, you need to purchase third-party solutions designed to accommodate the Switch Lite’s smaller frame if you want to take advantage of the many Nintendo Switch games that are more fun to play when docked.

The photo shown above should visually explain why, but here are the dimensions of each (in inches):

The problem here is the width. Measure the distance from the inside of the Lite’s left thumb to the inside of the right thumb and the result is 6.125 inches, much shorter than the width of the Nintendo dock.

Since there’s no removable Nintendo Switch controller, this model will never fit inside the original Nintendo Switch dock without some serious hardware modifications to the latter, namely removing 0.3125 inches of plastic from each side of the dock unit’s base. It’s just not practical, not to mention ugly.

For third-party docking stations designed specifically for the Switch Lite, the HORI Dual USB Playstand is a great solution. Note that this dock also includes two additional USB-A ports so you can connect wired controllers such as Nintendo’s Pro Controller. This wired connection eliminates the lag associated with wireless controllers during gameplay.

Even if you don’t want a dedicated port, the USB-C port allows the console to connect to a multi-port USB hub. You can then pull out the console stand, plug in some wired controllers, pair up some additional Joy-Cons, and play in tabletop mode. Talk about fun!

Can you play a Switch game on one and continue on the other?

While you can’t play the Nintendo Switch Lite on your TV, you can still play your games on the slimmer version, then pick up where you left off on the larger docked model. All you need is an internet connection and a Nintendo paid membership subscription. allows you freely change back and forth between any model registered to your Nintendo Account.

First, make sure you have a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, i.e. In fact cheap compared to Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus.

Then make sure automatic backups are enabled on your primary console. This sends the game save data to the cloud. For example, if you usually play games on the Switch Lite, you’ll want those saves to sync to the attached Nintendo Switch.

To do this, follow this path: System Settings > Data Management > Save Data to Cloud > (Select User) > Backup Settings.

The final step is to make sure that the user information on your Nintendo Switch account matches your Switch Lite account. Then go back to system settings and turn on the option to automatically save data backup.

Your progress from the regular Switch will be synced and ready to use on the Switch Lite when you pick it up to play.

Unfortunately, cloud saves don’t work on all Nintendo Switch games, so you can only use the service to back up specific games. The list of incompatible titles may include some of your favorites, such as Dark Souls Remastered, Fortnite, Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu, Pokemon Sword/Shield, and Splatoon 2. On the plus side, there are tons of popular games, like animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Luigi’s Mansion 3 that support cloud saves. Other compatible favorites include BioShock Remastered, Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, Minecraft Dungeons, The Outer Worlds, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. You can drop in and out of your games without worrying about losing your progress with this or any other cloud save compatible title.
