Marva Hicks, the famous R&B singer and actress, passed away on September 16 at the age of 47. Her cause of death has not been determined and it is not clear if she had any health problems. Her husband, Akwasi Taha, and her family informed Ebony magazine that:
“Her devotion to her partner, family, friends and entertainment world knows no bounds.” We were deeply moved by the overwhelming love. Thank you for your kindness and prayers.”
Holly Robinson-Peete, an actress and a close friend of Hicks, also paid tribute to her on social media.

All about Marva Hicks
Marva Hicks was born in Petersburg, but her exact date of birth is uncertain. She is known for her work in television, including roles in One Life to Live, Sister, Sister and Star Trek: Travel. She played Roberta Williams in both the 1999 film Asunder and the 2013 film Labor Day. In addition to her television and film roles, she is best known for her plays on Broadway and off stage. Among her memorable performances are Motown the Musical, Caroline or Change, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music and others.
She has received the Helen Hayes Award three times and has toured with musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, James Ingram and Sheryl Crow. In 1991, her song Never Been In Love Before reached number seven on the R&B chart. The song appeared on her self-titled first album, released the same year. She studied theater in New York before embarking on a successful career in the entertainment world. She also took acting classes in Washington, DC. She recorded several demos before releasing Look Over My Shoulder in 1981.
Hicks then spent three years singing in Lena Horne’s Broadway musical and met Stevie Wonder on tour in London. She began touring with him in the mid-1980s and was the lead vocalist on his first album, Characters. In the late 1980s, she signed with Polydor Records Ltd. and released his self-titled debut LP in 1991. However, it was a commercial failure.
She even played Rafiki in The Lion King, a musical film based on the 1994 Walt Disney Animation Studios animated film of the same name. In an episode of the space opera television series Babylon 5, she sang the gospel hymn There’s No Hiding Place Here Down Here. It was later included on the album Mosquito by indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
