Bonnie Garmus News
Before relocating to London in 2017, Bonnie Garmus, 65, was born and raised in California and had resided in Seattle and Geneva. In the upcoming television adaptation of her internationally bestselling debut novel Lessons in Chemistry, played by Captain Marvel star Brie Larson, Elizabeth Zott, an American scientist fired for being pregnant in 1955, seeks retribution by being hired to host a teatime cooking programme.
The book is, in Stephen King’s words, “the Catch-22 of early feminism: witty, occasionally hilarious, angry, and frequently surreal.” After visiting a literary festival in Dubai, Garmus—who also works as a copywriter and creative director—discussed the book.
Humour, in my opinion, is a great tool for writers who wish to tackle a challenging subject without coming across as preachy. Sexism is, in other words, not funny because it is degrading, miserable, frustrating, dull, ineffective, foolish, repulsive, and wholly unscientific. But when they attempt to cope with it or choose not to deal with it, individuals show both their strengths and shortcomings, which is where humour may be found.
Many readers can relate to Elizabeth Zott. There are so few of us who haven’t experienced being mistreated because we’re women, people of colour, gender-diverse, neuro-diverse, too big, too thin, too short, too tall, or any other characteristic you can think of.
Elizabeth, however, is a rationalist; she does not equate societal prejudice with reality and does not follow those who do. Writing a character like that is enjoyable. And it’s a privilege to interact with readers from all over the world, including the Middle East, Africa, South America, Australia, North America, and Europe, to learn not only how similar we are but also how committed we are to bringing about genuine social change.
