Kathleen “Kathy” Gonzalez, who described herself as “polished trailer trash,” lived in the same apartment building as 68-year-old Helen Wilson. On February 6, 1985, Helen’s sister found her dead.
A former Beatrice Police Department investigator, Burdette Searcey, began his independent investigation before he was hired as a deputy sheriff by Jerry DeWitt, the new Gage County Sheriff.
Burdette interviewed several informants who mentioned Joseph White, Thomas Winslow, Ada Joann Taylor, Cliff Shelden, Mark Goodson, Beth Johnson, Debra Shelden, and Charlotte Bishop as frequent visitors to Helen’s apartment. In the initial investigation, investigators took semen from the victim’s body and three fingerprints at her home, including one on a knife and two on a door frame.
So Burdette believed that this heinous crime was not possible for one person alone. She also had a witness named Lisa Podendorf who claimed to have seen Ada JoAnn Taylor, Thomas Winslow, Joseph White, and Charlotte Johnson parked near Wilson’s apartment.

Burdette Searcey questioned Kathy Gonzalez during the primary investigation and she implicated James Dean in Helen’s brutal death. However, when James was questioned by the deputy sheriff, he remembered Kathy’s presence in the apartment. He also added to Kathy’s injury during the attack on Helen.
Debra Shelden, another suspect in the crime, also shared a similar story. She told the sheriff’s department that she remembered Kathy in her apartment with a bloody nose. She added that she didn’t know Kathy and forgot about her until she had the nightmare about her. Burdette then showed him a photo of Kathy and Debra that matched the features of the woman he saw in the dream.
At the Gage County Jail, Kathy confronted Shelden and Ada JoAnn and asked why they thought she was involved in the crime. Shelden laughed and said, “I don’t know, I just remember you.” Ana JoAnn told her, “I don’t really remember you being there.”
Police arrested Kathy on May 25, 1989 in Colorado. When she was arrested, she said that she had been “worried about it for four years.” However, she has repeatedly said that she does not remember showing up during Wilson’s murder. On May 26, during an interview with psychologist Wayne Price at Beatrice, Kathy asked Wayne to hypnotize her so she could remember herself to be present, but Price refused.
Wayne revealed to Kathy that another witness charged with the crime hinted that Kathy was there at the time of Helen’s murder.
When Kathy asked Wayne how he could jog his memory, Wayne told her that he would remember if he relaxed and that his memories could come back to his dreams. When she asked what if she still didn’t remember anything, Wayne said it would be “a court decision.”
Wayne told Kathy that if she were “in there and not participating”, it would be a “very different situation” than if she were “in there participating”. Wayne told Gonzalez that since she was implicated by the other two, there was a “good chance” that she was blocking him from her memory.
“We don’t want you to be responsible for anything you haven’t done, and you know I have no idea what. [White] either [Taylor] and Winslow will talk about you,” Wayne said. He said that he would work with her to help her recover the memory of her being locked out of her.
Meanwhile, during a blood test, Kathy’s blood test came back positive, matching the blood type discovered at the crime scene. However, this was delayed by a genetic marker from the blood from the crime scene.
dr. Reen Roy sent the lab report that included the analysis. The report states that one of the genetic markers in Gonzalez’s blood (Gc-2–1) is different from one of the genetic markers identified by Roy in type B blood (Gc-1) found at the crime scene. Despite this, Dr. Roy later testified in a pre-trial statement. González “cannot be ruled out as a type B blood donor in many of the bloodstains that I found.”
James, who went on to reinforce his statement, said that Kathy’s injury was the result of a struggle. He allegedly saw her bleeding in Wilson’s apartment.
