Argylle’s Second Weekend Box Office Drop Is Henry Cavill’s Worst Since 2016

Summary

  • Henry Cavill’s
    Argylle
is a disappointing box office flop, with only a $6.6 million second-weekend opening against a rumored $200 million budget.
  • The star-studded spy movie, despite its cast, is projected to continue performing poorly with a 62% drop from last weekend.
  • Argylle
‘s lackluster performance poses a severe challenge for the movie’s franchise ambitions, as it falls far short of the required $300 million profitability mark.

Henry Cavill’s Argylle is quickly becoming the next great box office disappointment. The spy movie often verges into comedy and has a star-studded cast that includes Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, and Samuel L. Jackson. While that cast might ordinarily lead to massive box office returns, the movie opened to a mere $6.5 million against a budget that had been rumored to be $200 million, though it is likely much lower.

According to a report by Deadline, Argylle‘s poor returns are likely to continue. With a $6.6 million projected take for the weekend, the movie has suffered a massive 62 percent drop from last weekend. It’s Cavill’s biggest second-week drop since 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which suffered an 81 percent drop, according to Box Office Mojo. Argylle likely requires $300 million to reach profitability, and it is currently sitting at under $30 million two weeks into its run.

Why Is Argylle Failing At The Box Office?

It is shocking anytime a movie fails at the box office to the extent that Cavill’s latest blockbuster did. Many of Argylle‘s early reviews were somewhat negative, which decreased some of the draw when it was first released. Audiences were somewhat more forgiving, but still not wholly positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics granted the movie a 32 percent Tomatometer score. The audience score was a mere 72 percent, which will hardly send crowds to the cinema.

Another major problem was the release date. January and February tend to be slow months for movies, and this movie released the week before the Super Bowl. Even if the first week was successful, it would have still suffered a massive drop. After all, that is ordinarily the case with Super Bowl weekend. A delay could have saved some of the box office performance, even if it would not ensure that the movie would achieve profitability.

The lack of an established brand also decreased Argylle‘s chances of success. There was no well-known and well-regarded product to adapt, nor was it part of an existing universe of movies. Many movies have been struggling at the box office recently, even with a well-known brand, as Lightyear, The Marvels, and Fast X exemplified. Argylle was simply a movie without an existing audience, which risked failure from the beginning. Cavill’s presence just wasn’t enough to save it.
