Annie Ernaux was born on 1 September 1940 in Lillebonne, Normandy, France, she is 82 years old now. Annie grew up in nearby Yvetot, Normandy region, northern France.
In 1960 Annie traveled to London, the United Kingdom, where she worked as a helper from a foreign country working, an experience she would later relate to in 2016’s Memoire de fille (A Girl’s Story).
Upon coming back to France, Annie studied at the universities of Rouen and then Bordeaux, certified as a schoolteacher, and obtained a higher degree in modern literature in 1971. Ernaux performed for a time on a thesis project, unfinished, on Pierre de Marivaux (French playwright and novelist).

Annie started her literary career in 1974 with an autobiographical novel Les Armoires vides. In 1984, Annie won the Renaudot Prize (French literary award) for another of her autobiographical works La Place (A Man’s Place), It was an autobiographical narration description focusing on her relationship with her father and Annie’s experiences growing up in a small town in France, and her ensuing process of moving into maturity and away from her parents’ place of origin.
On 6 October 2022, it was declared that Annie was to be awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature. Annie is the 16th French writer, and the 1st Frenchwoman, to secure the literature prize. In congratulating Annie, Emmanuel Macron (President of France) said that she is the voice “of the freedom of women and of the forgotten”.
