TLC’s Bad Hair Day premiered on August 24, 2022, and in the first episode, Angela Phipps helps Jamie, a 35-year-old trans woman from Newton, New Hampshire, who was experiencing male-pattern hair loss. But her problem was much more complicated than that. From the age of 15 or 16, Jamie decided to remain a “guy” because she couldn’t imagine herself as a bald woman.
So Angela began her treatment by examining Jamie’s scalp to see if she was a candidate for surgery. When confirmed, she took 2860 grafts and after 8 months of the procedure, Jamie was blessed with a naturally curved and feminine hairline. Also, she got a full receding region that goes towards the top where it blends into the existing hair.
Watching Angela work her magic is truly a treat. But it would not have been possible without the persistence of TLC. That! At first, Angela ignored her calls thinking she was a scam. But as the calls continued, the doctor finally realized that the work was authentic.
According to TLC, Angela was cast not only because of her stellar work, but also because she was “a bit of a wacko.” The show wasn’t looking for someone whose character yells “doctor.” Instead, they wanted someone with whom patients could connect deeply.
