How nine friends helped someone in need of a heart transplant
When Amy Silverstein underwent her second life-saving heart transplant at the age of 50, she credited a group of nine friends for saving her life.
Friends, who came from many different aspects of Silverstein’s life and from across the country, cared for Silverstein at her hospital in California as she waited for a heart transplant while suffering from heart failure.
Friends made sure she was rarely alone, even creating a calendar to organize her time in the hospital, which Silverstein, 53, describes in her new memoir, “My Glory Is That.” I Had Friends Like That.”
One of the nine friends, Jane Shepardson, told ABC News, “You feel lucky to have come forward, and it’s been a gift to us to be able to move forward for her.”
Even as they spent time making fun of Silverstein and treating her at the hospital spa, the friends, some of whom are strangers to each other, said they believed there was a “very real possibility” that they had could lose Silverstein.

When Silverstein was a law student, he said, “I had a hard time walking to class. I went to the doctor and they found out I was having a heart attack.”
Silverstein has surpassed those goals by going on to live more than 20 years with his original donor heart. Silverstein was allowed to walk in the hospital the day after his second transplant in 2014 and was able to walk down the hallway.
Silverstein notes: “I learned that this young lady, whom I knew nothing about, was an athlete and she inspired me to run and I could feel her when I was run. “She gave me a new life, not just a life, but a new life.”
About a year after the heart transplant, Shepardson recalled, “we were at a reunion and I looked over and saw Amy dancing with so many colors on her face.” “He stopped me and I started crying.” The woman added: “We never could have imagined that she would feel this good, look so beautiful and be the healthiest ever.
