Created by Michael Cohen, a cognitive scientist at MIT and Amherst College, the misleading video demonstration is “blind to incremental change.”
At first it seems to paint a calm and unchanging picture of a “science lab waiting room”.
But in the end, the video reveals just how many objects slowly changed color, moved, or completely disappeared without people noticing.
“While trying to prepare a new example of this phenomenon for students, I realized that I could change dozens of elements without observers noticing,” said Cohen, who teaches cognitive neuroscience at Amherst College.
“All in all, this illusion highlights how people can perceive and remember much more of the world around them than they intuitively realize.”
Fans named the incredible footage one of the three most impressive optical illusions of the year in the annual competition hosted by the Neural Correlate Society.
